Character status tracking when using mini's

Post by garhkal »

Due to the use of minis in my games, i've been torn on how to track certain statuses for them (both beneficial/harmful) such as "this one's entangled, that one's magically held, this one's got a PFE/Prot fire, and such.

So i got some card stock (red for bad, green for good), and created some 'chits'..
So i have red 'tokens' for
Light/Darkness in eyes (and separate ones for Cont light/darkness in eyes)
Cursed (opposite of bless)
Held
Sleep
Paralyzed
Stunned
Ko'ed
Knocked down
Poisoned
Entangled
blinded/deafened/diseased
Confused (umberhulks)/Chaos'ed (spell)
Spooked/Enthralled/Enfeebled/Magical fear
(FOR enemies) Prot from good and PFG 10'rad
Silenced
Curse bestowed (Remove curse reversed)
Heat metal/Chill metal.

And green (good ones) for
Bless, chant/prayer
Con/Str/Dex boost
Aid
Prot fire/cold
Resist fire/cold
Neg plane protection
PfE/Pfe 10'rad
Faerie fire
Sanctuary
Invis (inc invis animal/undead)
and Displace self..

That's most of the beneficial stuff up through L3..

If anyone can think of other's i might have missed (bad OR good), let me know..

What do YOU use for tracking it? Just mentally remember, those 'mana stones'? Tokens on a board? Coins/poker chips on the spell card/cha sheet??

I've been considering doing that, as opposed to writing it all down. Gets to be a bit much!

Haven't used maps in awhile. They don't contribute much to my gaming experience. When I used them more I would sometimes just jot notes down on an area that wasn't in use. This breaks down somewhat if you have a ton of statuses going around but otherwise it works fine.

If I wanted to expand what I had been doing I'd probably combine it with your chit system but instead of a chit type for each possible thing I'd use numbered chits or a few different colors and assign a value to each one as needed. I'd just write down what meant what on an unused map corner like a map legend.

The usual approach I saw in 4th ed (which has a ridiculous number of status effects) is to use different coloured rings and drop them over/hang them off the minis. Usually, the rings were just the ring from plastic soft drink bottle caps. That allows for a range of different colours for different purposes.
