Freaky weather

Yesterday was a historic weather event here on Long Island.

In a narrow stretch of western Suffolk County we got over 13" of rainfall in 24 hours, and almost 10" of that fell in the two-hour period between 6:00 and 8:00 AM. For the engineers out there, each of those two hours represented a separate 500-year rainfall event. To put it in proportion, it is more rain than we typically get in the months of June, July and August combined.
Roads and homes were flooded, the first floor of the local hospital was inundated and all the patients and staff had to be evacuated to the upper floors, and with the storm hitting at the start of the morning commute, hundreds of commuters were stranded or blocked from getting to work as the flood waters reached their time of concentration.

My home was okay, but neighbors a block away had their homes flooded out.
My brother, who lives a few miles from me, and whose property fronts a small pond, had the waters come to within 15' of his doorstep, and had a flood in his basement. I took half a day off to help bail him out (literally).

And today, it's all gone. The sun came out, the waters receded and all is back to normal save for some abandoned cars on the highways.

Yeah, it was unusually wet for out here in Skagit County, WA last Wednesday too, although obviously not anything like what you poor folks in Suffolk County got. Damn, I can't remember ever experiencing (or even imagine) ten inches of rain in two hours and I've spent some time in the Olympic Rain Forest, which is one of the highest precipitation areas in the Americas, if not Earth.

Every year the weather continues to get more odd. Good where I'm at as it seems to get warmer and warmer... yet when it does snow, it's terrible... but it's gone in 24 hours ...

I'm in a valley between two of the ongoing fires. For a week it was smoke filled and the sky was orange. Felt like we were on Mars.

Yeah I have peeps stuck smack in the middle of both of them. They said they can deal with the power outages and rain; it is the heat & humidity that is draining.

The remnants of Hurricane Laura are coming through my area right now. It's mostly scattered, but we could see some periods of hard rain. It's raining fairly hard right now, but not crazy.
Which just reminded me to look.....aaaaand yup, my wife left the living room windows wide open.

Climate change, my friend. It all comes back to climate change.
Hurricanes feed on heat in the ocean. As the oceans warm, storms get stronger and more frequent.
