Favourite character you ever played?

Post by Jenara »

I've posted this here because its not edition dependent, think the title is a little misleading and this forum is mostly full of DND stuff anyway.

I was just thinking we all have our favourite characters, Jenara being mine of course, I would love to get her out and play one day, but life isnt really a challenge anymore, she's a happy ruling a country as an NPC.

Anyway (this is very brief) Jenara is a CG Silvanesti elven 14/18 Fighter/Mage, she's 5ft tall, with black hair and green eyes. She aligned herself to the Red Robes before her test because she can see the balance, yet her people called her a "Dark Elf" she is no longer welcome in her home.

Jenara became appalled with the way her people treated the Kagonesti (wild elves) during the war of the Lance and left her people at the age of 110 to help defend Palanthas, she fought in the latter stages of the War of the Lance.

She passed her test of high sorcery at the age of 125 where she was taunted by her father and her mother (illusions of course), she spent 5 days at Wayreth in all.

She took to Spell jamming after the Dark Queens Army fell and made her way to the Rock of Brall, eventually she and her companions defeated Dragon Mountain, which had jumped to an alternative world, she now rules the county they arrived in.

What was great was seeing this character develop, she went from a spoilt little girl, became a solider and just developed.

Currently she carries a hand X-Bow of speed and Shortsword called Valkiss.

Thats a pretty quick history.... so what character would you love to play again? And why?

I've got two very different ones: the first is Nanok (also my name from the old boards). He was a human who was orphaned at a young age. He was taken to a mage college where it was discovered that, even though he had no natural magical talent himself, he was more resilient to magical attacks. The mages furthered this by tattoing the boy with sigils that would give him even more resistance to spells. He became part of a group within the school whose only function was to provide a living target for fledgling mages.

Eventually, he was caught in the middle of a nasty power struggle within the academy that left the entire school in ruins. With nowhere else to go, he joined the army, first as a porter, then as a squire, and then as a swordsman. After surviving a few battles (A few of which relied upon his magical resistances) he became an adventurer.

Officially he was a dual class Barbarian/Fighter. :P I was hoping to get him to a venerable age so he could become a "Wise Man", but the group broke up before then.

My other favorite is Iggy. He's a character I use when DMing. He's in every campaign and always has a different role to play, but he's always a scatterbrained, elderly gnome. He's been a tinker, a physician, and a stable hand to Gryphon Riders. Always fun and the players always look forward to encountering him, no matter what his role. :D

I think almost every character I've played was my favorite in some way. Some players tend to be very fickle with their characters, switching back and forth as their interest waxes and wanes, I'm practically married to my characters. I play them for years at a time if given the opportunity. Nowhere was this more notable than in Shadowrun, where the episodic nature of the game meant players could switch out characters from run to run and I had four characters over five years and two editions (and one of those was specifically created as a back-up character, to be run in side games when our main characters were already involved).

That, and it's hard to pick one because each of the characters I've loved playing I've loved for different reasons. But if I had to pick...

There was Phindar of Menzoberranzan and his wife Layne, a half-orc Fighter 9/Thief 11 and a half elf Fighter 8/Mage 9/Thief 10; who had a convoluted, soap-opera backstory, and who I was playing in the late days of 2e when my group was playing high-lethality boxed sets (Undermountain, Dragon Mountain and so on) and so everyone was playing two characters.

Also in 2e, there was Vron Na'shol de la Pore, human and wildly successful as a CE character in a largely good party. High stats other than a 4 STR and a 6 CON, which allowed me to dual class from Cleric 5 to Thief 7 to Mage 9. He was too weak to carry his own equipment so he had a kobold skeleton caddie that the party would occasionally give things to-- it had magical chainmail, a magical short sword, glass eyes we'd gotten from somewhere (Aurora's Guide?), an elf scalp and halfling foot slippers we'd found in the gear of some orcs or hobgoblins. I had a sketch of the kobold I would update from time to time, and it was pretty unsettling.

Both of these characters (or all three, but I am largely unable to separate Phindar and Layne in my mind) had long, involved character histories back when I wrote long involved character histories. I rarely go to the trouble anymore, both because time is at a premium and because I've found that I like to come to the table with a basic concept and flesh it out from there, in-play as it were. But good times.

I would go on, but time is at a premium and I have to go to work.

Sadly, I can count on one hand the number of times I've actually gotten to play DnD (I run the games around these parts). My taste in character concepts has changed a lot over then years, so I don't much care for some of the early few characters I've played.

That said, I have one who's my current favorite. For once I'm not running the game so I can play a bit.

The character is named Garagrim. He is a dwarf fighter/wizard 2/4. I'm pushing him towards the spellsword and eldrich knight prestige classes from 3.5. He's also a specialist necromancer.

I try to avoid creating too much back story for characters unless its pertinent to the overall game setting. I like to let the character develop out of the things he experiences.

Really I came up with the concept while I was driving by a graveyard one night.

I pictured this man, standing in the graveyard. He was a warrior, dressed in a kimono, and all around him, cloaked figures wielding daggers slipped between gravestones, coming ever closer.

I was listening to some metal at the time, I can't recall what, but I remember at this point in the song the singer shouted the word "RISE" over and over to the sound of an epic guitar cords, and I imagined my character saying this, and raising his hands, green light playing about his hands and face. To the surprise and horror of his would be assassins, the dead claw their way from the tombs and crypts of the graveyard to tear the killers limb from limb.

And thus, this character was born.

So far he's been lawful neutral, but I could see him going evil later, depending on how the campaign runs.

I wish I could say it's hard for me to say, but my group either doesn't maintain a campaign long enought to form attachments to my characters, or we just don't have enough actual roleplay to make them interesting enough.

I would have to say it's a toss up between two characters. One was a scarred fighter/rogue, who during the course of his adventure was cursed with a gender changing spell, which would randomly change him into a fairly attractive woman lol. Rather silly, I know, but...it was an interesting character :P

I also had used some rather interesting tactics with this character. Oiled rope + Smoke sticks + flaming weapon = instant smokescreen!

The other was a Warforged Artificer. I didn't get to play him as long as I had wished, but the idea of a sentient construct who explored magical creation was a really cool concept. Being able to summon elemental enhancements on peoples weapons and changing them as needed was a handy bonus too.
The Kobold gonna kobold.

My favourite character was Rankhar Zenthis. He was a priest of the god Arawn, the celtic god of Death, from the Legends & Lore. I played him for years, from when I just started playing when I was 14 until I was 18 I think (am 30 now). We had a great group, we played loads, and we went through so many friggin adventures, I can't remember half of them  Good ol' times... The amount of people Rankhar cut down with his scythe, and the amount of people he scared the shit out of by being all dead and gloomy and dark, hahaha, excellent. What I remember most about those days was that all our characters in that group had become so vivid, I can still remember all the other PC's of my friends as well, like you would a character from your favourite book, or movie.

This something people aren't going to get playing by e-mail, I stopped playing Jen Years ago but still ensure her sheet is up to date incase it gets old an grimy...

Your not going to do that with an Optimum Build are you?

my first long running character was Ryan

he was a badass, and since I was only starting and very young his personality wan't that well developed. but he and his compagnion had some epic adventures and ended up heading an expedition of several gallions to found a new nation and fighting undersee demons, it was epic.

other then that I've always been favorable off druids. I often use druids in my own campaigns as guides and wise men. they have a wim of mystisism about them I like and shapeshifting is the coolest ability ever deviced.
My campaign druid goes by many names but he tends to act like a bit of a senile old man, helpfull but a bit off a jerk, that way he is rarely exposed as the power he posses.

+ druids make great powerfull NPC's because of there TN nature and thus unwillingness to take actual sides in combat

Was and probably always will be Kiiro Al'Ammon. A fighter from an Egyption-esque land known as "Scheherezade". He was a specialist in the Bastard sword who moved on to become a Grand Master. I played him 2-3 times a week of session lasting anywhere from 4-16 hour sessions. I can say without a doubt that I spent more time AS Kiiro than I did in class in college. We played that way for about 3 years. And have played sporadically thereafter.

At this point, Kiiro is a 23rd Level Fighter, Grand Master of the Bastard Sword who wears the scales of a dark serpent god as his armor. His marquee items are his Bastard Sword +5 "Redeemer" that offers a chance of salvation to any evil soul it sends to the afterlife. His Delseem's Scale Armor. His Cheetah Cloak of Amedio, and Ring of Fire Elemental Command.

He's Chaotic Good, has a wife and many children, and hopes to one day settle down to train other young swordsman the way of the bastard sword. His closest friends are Tracker the Fighter/Thief, and Kalrokc, the half hobgoblin warrior.

He is a slayer of dragons, giants, and men. He saved the Gray Orc's from extinction, is friend to the great emperor Vladamir Karelin, ruler of all of Karelia. He is friend to Orymius Pascasius, Necromancer of the Plane of Chaos.

His Thac0 is somewhere around -13, and his AC I think rests at -8. Kiiro cannot critical miss thanks to a hard earned proficiency. Although he still always misses on a 1. :P

OP? Totally. BUT, I contest that when you consider how many hours played with this character you will see that it was actually earned. I can't count the number of times he has nearly died.
