Another week on the road – this region was peaceful, or at least calm, for so long, but it is clear from the type of disputes that people are having lately that upheaval and disruption of equilibrium are on the way. Rumors of the old war heating up again have been circulating for years, but lately they’ve sounded truer than usual.
Best not to travel alone, then. And despite not having a specific destination, there happened to be a small commercial caravan leaving town the day after her business concluded, so why not? The family running the caravan, a middle aged father, his younger brother, his daughter and her betrothed, and a cousin, are welcoming enough, and treated the hired help and the passengers warmly, like a big family. The passengers and crew are a fairly decent bunch as well.
This run has been fairly quiet. Until this morning, when the spouse spotted a man on horseback, giving the caravan much too hard a look, and rushed back with the news of bandits. Two hours later, with the village in sight, the “bandits” arrived from the northeast. But they were legionnaires, horsemen and foot soldiers, dozens of them. Village bells began ringing, villagers began coming out, weapons in hand, even a few real swords and shields. Then it got worse for everyone: local cavalry from the south, and the village and the caravan caught between them.
