BishGada (Private Thread) Tomb of Horrors

The (Original!) Tomb of Horrors!!!
S1 by the great Gygax 1978. Everything adapted to 2e. This is NOT the Return to ToH written for 2e

Labyrinth of Madness!!! Previously Concluded (by TPK)
S6 by Monte Cook from 1995. Designed for 2e. IMHO this one is the tougher of the two, but not by much.

Riddlemaster Kit Details
Probable Path: Riddlemasters can use their great intellects to make analytical decisions. When a decision must be made concerning multiple options (e.g., which hallway to proceed down, which door to open first, which opponent to attack first in order to achieve some goal, etc.), the Riddlemaster can use his intellect to help make the decision. In such cases, the DM secretly rolls an Intelligence check for the Riddlemaster, with a penalty equal to the number of previous probable path decisions made that day (representing mental fatigue). If the roll succeeds, the DM tells the player all significant clues that the Riddlemaster might know or observe. If there are no clues, no information is gained-- Riddlemasters aren't lucky, they're just very intelligent.

If the roll is a natural 20, the information gained is misleading.
Unless a given situation changes somehow, using this ability multiple times in the same situation gives identical results.

Riddles/Puzzles: If any adventure includes an actual riddle or puzzle that the players must solve, the player of the Riddlemaster can make twice as many attempts to solve the riddle or puzzle as is normally allowed. For example, an adventure might include an encounter in which the party runs into a sphinx. The sphinx may demand the answer to a riddle in exchange for safe passage. In this situation, if the Riddlemaster gives the answer, the player can actually make two guesses, and if either is correct, the sphinx is satisfied.

The same thing applies if the party comes across a room with a tiled floor that must be crossed in a specific sequence. The Riddlemaster is allowed to make one free mistake. Only on his second mistake does the character suffer any hazardous consequences.
If a problem has a time limit, the Riddlemaster has twice the allotted time to solve it.

A special use of solving riddles and puzzles occurs when a Riddlemaster attempts to understand a newly discovered spell. The Riddlemaster has a +10% bonus to his roll to learn spells (to a maximum of 95%).
Furthermore, the Riddlemaster gains the ability to use any written magical item at 8th level, instead of 10th level.

Common Sense: To signify the common sense a Riddlemaster has at his disposal, Riddlemasters gain certain benefits. Although these benefits are similar to those of the Jester kit, they are not luck, but rather a result of intellectual calculations made by the Riddlemaster.

· The Riddlemaster has a +1 adjustment to his Armor Class.

· A Riddlemaster receives a +1 (or 5%) bonus to many die rolls, including saving throws, individual initiative, attacks rolls, damage rolls, proficiency checks, thief skill checks, ability checks, and all ability-based rolls (bend bards, system shock, etc. ), except for resurrection survival.

The only die rolls that common sense doesn't affect are surprise, initial character generation rolls, hit die rolls, resurrection survival, and monster damage rolls.

Riddling and Rhyming: By chanting certain riddles and rhymes, a Riddlemaster can influence an audience's reactions. This ability functions in all ways as the True Bard's influence reactions ability.

Background story:
Galan Farvaris was raised in a small village but was never settled like his other fellow elves. When he was only a child he asked his parents permission and joined a caravan that passed through their village. He worked with the caravan and traveled far lands for many years, being an elf time mean less for him and he learned many skills both in the way of speaking to crowds, deceiving, speed of hands, illusions and more. With his sharp mind he could easily pick on any subject but his love was music. When he had free time he composed music and tried to gain skill in many instruments. Most of his music was romantic and heart piercing as it described the harmony of nature that the elves yearn to.
His travels with the caravan that visited their village took several years. Later on he made some travels on his own or joined other caravans. At one of the times he joined a caravan as mercenary, protecting a mage. His curiosity was ignited and with his plentiful skills, his ability with languages and the speed he picked also on the ways of the arcane just by observing the mage, he quickly caught the mage attention and became his personal assistant. In reward the mage mentored him and Galan gatherd more and more knowledge and experience with the mysterious ways.
Years later he decided to settle down for a while. He chose the city he more frequently visited along his travels as he already knew there a bunch of people and with his passion for music and performance he rent a place, turned it into a bar and later bought the place. Under the bar in a cellar he created a lab where he could practice his spells, and with the success of his bar he built a second story of it and served also breakfasts, and meals.
With his skill with people, his skill in music and the ability to make everything easier with spells, his business quickly succeed and was a gathering point for all sort of people, both high society and not so high... Galan became friend with all type of persons and was able to get information about almost anything interesting that happened close and far from his place. He also became close to political persons and have more than few of the influencing people in his debt. He also spend long time in the local library and made some business with other mages going through the city, seizing the opportunity to expend his abilities in the arcane.
In his own bar Galan met his soul mate. Elven woman, sharp minded and lovely to set eye upon. After a period of time getting to know each other and becoming close friends he courted her and eventually asked her hands. Following the elven tradition they visited both villages and performed their union ceremony on a pond shore in a forest at his beloved one land.
Later they returned to their bar and had a family, two daughters and a boy. As happy as Galan was with his family, his passion for adventure and knowledge never ceased. His family took it for grunted and on some adventures they even joined him, but for most cases he left on his own with promises to return. So far he kept his promises and he made another such promise just before leaving to the Tomb of Horror... (Muhaaahaaahaaa... ;))

Stats:

[3d4] = 7 [3d4] = 5 [3d4] = 11 [3d4] = 7 [3d4] = 10 [3d4] = 7

Roll for base. Do I have to use the base in order or can I assign them to attributes any way I want?
I'm not sure what I want to play. Mages always have the greatest appeal to me, but I've just been one.
Is a Ranger good for the campaign given they are more natural in, well, nature? Do the ranger have the followers that comes at level 10? Since a ranger need 600K xp for level 10 and now he has 2M does it mean the followers will have ~1.4M XP? or 700K XP? Who will play them?
With the rolls I had I can't get the 10% bonus for XP.
I thought also about Druid, but again, not sure a maze is the best place for this character to shine, and it's shapeshifting is minor comparing to polymorph self spell. Does the Druid have three 11th level druids serving him?

You arranfe the base as desired.

The module is 'tomb of horrors'... so... likely very little nature. Rangers still make good fighters/trackers and are casters at high levels.

Followers will be decided depending on how many players we get, but we're not draging 40 npcs into the tomb with the adventurers. There will be a 'base camp' outside like in Labyrinth, however.

Can I be an elven bard?
It's not the strongest class composition but it is colorful. Although I myself as a person doesn't tend to be the most charismatic in the group which is usually the roll of the bard, but I can try.

If I can be an elf then the +1 DEX may put the scores high enough for 10% exp. bonus.

What do you think? Do you like the idea of having a bard in the group?

You certainly can be. Bards get lot of flak but they're actually a great support class

Hi,
I've few questions please:
1. What armor can a bard use when casting spells? And can such armor be an armor of command instead of plate mail? (The idea is the 18 CHA. Is it a real 18 CHA in armor of command?)
2. If (1) doesn't work can a rod of splendor be used to boost the CHA to 18? (and then use the point spread to other attributes?)
3. Does elf must be a multi-class? is there a dual class race with bonus to DEX?
4. I thought again of dual classing fighter/bard with 2M points it can be 8lvl fighter and 18lvl bard. It could also explain why he could start with low CHA and later after improving CHA magically, acquiring friends and influence, studied a little and became a bard. (he could always love to play instruments). But it is a bit munchkin stuff so I might use it only as basic fighter (without specialization in darts :)).
5. Can I choose the spells of Ring of spells storing? And can the bard store spells as wizard?

If Armor of command in some manner works for the bard without hindering all his abilities/magic I think I'll go with the following magic items:
Armor of command 1500XP
Sword +1 Luck 1000XP
Helm of Brilliance (which can turn the blade to Flame Tongue) 2500XP.

I wanted also gauntlets of ogre power but I guess I'll be a not so strong fighter. :)
I also looked at magical musical instruments and wondered if it was possible to use the instrument both for his magical ability and the boost of moral of the bard, but couldn't choose cool enough magical instrument. and not enough magical XP in any case.

If Armor of command doesn't work then I'd go for the
Rod 2500XP + Ring of spell storing or Rod+ Elven chain mail + some weapon... not sure yet.
If the Rod doesn't work too then I'll have to consider again how to spread the 28 points...

-all physical armor interferes with arcane casting.
-I would allow a different armor type for 'armor of command' but it must be metalic and would carry the same xp cost. Per the description, the 18 cha only applies to 'encounter reactions' meaning interactions with other beings
-rod of splendor would change the character's cha to 18 so long as he has it on his person
-a race always either multiclasses or dual claseses, based on their racial lifespan. Elves multiclass. (Details in the rules thread)
-dual-classing a fighter bard should be fine as long as you chose an appropriate race for dual-classing
-the ring ia a randomized item. What i can do if you're interested is say it is arcane, and with spells of levels he can restore at his level. beyond that i'll randomly determine them. The item is just too rare for him to have ome that is a perfect match for what he wants

By the special exception in the rules thread, goblins and kobolds get a +1 to dex (though they have other penalties). Both races dual-class, and i would allow either to be bards

Really? Kobold with 18 CHA? :)

Naa... I'd would be less munchkin and more role playing.
Can elf cast spells wearing elven chain mail? (Just curious, it seems armor of command is not enough for the above 16 CHA required)

I guess I'll stick with elven bard. No dual class.
Does the helm of briliance interfere with spell casting?

Also, how much XP is ioun stone?

Helms prevent spellcasting, unless they are a specifically created magical item that allows it (i coyld not find any that do in my brief search through the 2e complete magic items netbook)

-an ioun stone is 300 xp. Also note, the rules thread specifies only 1 ioun stone may be 'purchased'

I thought to go with:
Rod of splendor - mainly for the high CHA that I hope will have some effect in the game when playing bard. (In 2nd ed. CHA seems a bit useless...)
Gauntlets of Ogre Power - again to boost attributes since the rolls are not so great
And elven chain +1.

But it seems we are all very string in the group, so I guess I'd live with Gauntlets of dexterity which are also 1000XP.
Also the bard must have CHA 15 at level one, assuming he didn't get the Rod of splendor by inheritance :) So the Rod would boost only 3 points.

I also debated a lot between cloak of protection +2 and winged boots. Cloak of protection works constantly and give +2 S.Th. but the boots are fun...

Given all that I'd choose my attributes and class as the follow:
Elven Bard (single class) level 19
STR 5 + 5
CON 7
DEX 7 + 7 + 1 (racial) + 1 gloves of DEX
INT 11 + 7
WIS 7 + 3
CHA 10 + 6

And the magical items are:
Elven chain mail (no bonus) = 1000XP (unless it must be at least +1)
Winged Boots - do I roll for the flying class or you?
Sword +1 Luckblade - do I roll for the number of wishes? ;)
Gauntlets of dexterity

If the elven must be at least +1 I'll drop the boots and instead have a cloak +1 and think of some more 500XP. Can the luck blade be +2?

I barely made it to 10% bonus and I think it is colorful if not strong character. I also forsake the ring of spell storing.
BTW, with low wisdom the chance of spell failure is only for priests spells or also for arcane spells?

-elven chain does not have have a magical bonus, no
-I'll roll flying class for winged boots after (if) you decide to go with them, then let you know the result
-the number of wishes on a luckblade is always secret ;p and it's a +1 sword only for this

Please let me know if this is your finalized magic item list
