Despite scuffing a rock along the ground, the ass and the hobgoblins are to preoccupied to notice as Ruehar close to a distance of 240 yards.

As the elf moves deftly and silently forwards making use of the thicker scrub, the woman starts to scream and kicks awkwardly at the tormentor who responds by pulling out his whip..
His companion starts to tug off the second boot.
Ruehar moves stealthily closer, as the second boot is removed and the whip is drawn back to strike the terrified woman.
At far range (150y) the elf lets an arrow fly, surprising the foes. (Neither foe is currently in melee, so both are viable targets.)

Which foe will Ruehar go for?
he has another 3 arrows to fire during surprise (segment 5, #7 & #9.)
=======

Gives them a chance to hear you with a 48% bonus, less 20% for the sea, less 20 for preoccupied, so 23% overall: D100: 77% fail, d100: 31% fail
D20: 4, woman misses.
HG#1 Init d10+5+3: 10+5=3=18, so less 10 goes on 8 next round.
I've tweaked your movement distances to indicate the art of the possible with an elf in HM. If you object, I will edit.
Shortbow is at a hefty -5 penalty at 150y, dropping to -2 at 100y.
You arrive at 150 y at segment 7, just as the second boot comes off and just before the woman is whipped.
Having already moved more than 50% movement, you only get one shot (and that's due to being elven.)
Acute Obs & Astute Obs give you +2 & +2 on surprise rolls, so 1d10: 4+2+2+1(GH)=9 Not surprised (and actually couldnt be but those two HG.)
Elven stealth gives foes -4 penalty to be surprised, so d10: 4-4=0. And 9-0=9, so you have 9 segments of surprise and can fire an arrow on odd segments.
Surprise Segment#1: Arrow #1 to hit 15+1 (surprise)+4 from behind +1GH=21, AC -6, hit. 2 dam +1GH =3 leather armour absorbs 1HP taking 1HP damage in doing so; 2HP dealt to HG.
Surprise Segment#2: Moves 24y closer, so now ~125y away.
Surprise Segment#3: Arrow #1 to hit 18+1 (surprise)+4 from behind +1GH=24, AC -9, hit. 2 dam +1GH =3 leather armour absorbs 1HPtaking 1HP damage in doing so; 2HP dealt to HG. The armour drops 1 armour class.
Surprise Segment#4: Moves 24y closer, so now ~100y away and range penalty drops from -5 to -2.
Give me a Glean Information check to see if you've heard anything much about hobgoblins.

[Ooc: all good except that I wanted to remain at long distance between 130 and 150 yards so it will take them a long time to get to me when they finally do get to act, giving me time to hide if they do. Since one is getting ready to whip the lady I'll put 2 arrows in that one.
RK1 glean info hobgoblins [1d100] = 93
Lol, nope :lol:]

It will take whether the gap is 100y or 150y, with the retreating clause it would still take the creature a round to close before they can hit on the following round unless they charge in which case they can reach you in 1 round. The only effective difference is reducing the distance penalty from -5 to -2. Up to you though.

You missed the "he has another 3 arrows to fire during surprise (segment 5, #7 & #9.)"

So, please give me three more arrow rolls (to hit & dam) and then initiative for round 1 after surprise is over.

Ok, at 100 yds
RK1 shbow [1d20] = 13[1d6] = 4[1d20] = 14[1d6] = 5[1d20] = 5[1d6] = 3
[+4dex+1Elf+1keen sight-1twitch-2range] =>+3
Segment 5, Arrow 3: [1d20]=13+3 +1 (surprise)+4 from behind +1GH=22, hit. 4 dam +1GH =5 dmg
Segment 6, Arrow 4: [1d20]=14+3 +1 (surprise)+4 from behind +1GH=23, hit. 5 dam +1GH =6 dmg
Segment 7, Arrow 4: [1d20]=5+3 +1 (surprise)+4 from behind +1GH=14, ??? 3 dam +1GH =4 dmg
Not sure if the last one hit. First two at the one about to whip the lady, third at the other.

RK1 init vs hobgoblins [1d10] = 1
init: 1-4(dex) -1(great honor)= -4
Messed up my first initiative roll by using a d20, so if you see 2 rolls that's what happened.

Capitalising on his stealthy approach, Ruehar still a further tow arrows into the back of the whip-wielding hobgoblin who drops to the ground writhing around in pain with four arrows stuck in his back.
The 5th arrow hits the boot-remover in the back. He panics and flees.

Ruehar has the opportunity to fire two more arrows at the fleeing hobgoblin, one at medium and one at long range.
What next?

======
Arrow 3: 5 dam, hits HG1, his leather armour absorbs 1HP dam but destroyed in thereby, and drops an Aumour Class, so HG1 takes 4HP dam
Arrow 4: 6 dam, hits HG1, has no no armour, so takes 6HP dam & fails a Trauma check (TN>15) d20:7, fail
Arrow 5: 4 dam, hits HG2, his leather armour absorbs 1HP, so HG2 takes 3HP dam. Morale check (TN<11) d20+5:14+5=19
HG2 Init d10:3

Ruehar moves forward after the fleeing hobgoblin at a pace that will allow him to fire as much as possible, hoping to bring him down before he escapes; perhaps bringing more hobgoblins... (i.e. as much as he can move and still get 2 attacks).

=====
RK1 vs fleeing hobgoblin Shortbow attk1,2 dmg1,2 [1d20] = 7[1d20] = 20[1d6] = 4[1d6] = 4
Arrow 6: [1d20]=7+3 +4 from behind(fleeing)+1GH=15, hit. 4 dam +1GH =5 dmg
Arrow 7: [1d20]=20+0(range vs attack bonus)+4 from behind +1GH=25, CRIT! 4 dam +1GH =5 dmg + crit result (RK1 vs fleeing hobgoblin crit result [1d8] = 1[1d10000] = 5280_

W007, crit!

Ruehar fires into the back of the panicking hobgoblin who flees, advancing another 60 yards before loosing another shaft and scoring a critical hit on the poor creature (HG2).

The woman cries out, "Kill them! Kill the brutes."

======
Ok the labeling confused me, Sorted now.
R1
Init1: Arrow hits HG2, 5dam, 1 into armour 4 into HG2, dropping an armour class.
Init 3: HG flees, elf advances
Init6: Arrow crits HG2, 5dam, 1 into armour 4 into HG plus a crit.

Crit severity (Mulligan) 8+1 GH + 10 (various bonuses, penatlies) + penetration d8:3 (rolled by GM) -1(penetration die) +1(GH)=Severity 22
Crit 5280 location: back of left forearm
double damage (roll again), HG2 is a -3 to hit, drops the boots he's holding, major vein severed, 66% chance of bursting an artery d100:22%, he's gushing blood and dies in 2 rounds.

What next?

Seeing the hobgoblin mortally wounded Ruehar continues forward and takes another pair of shots at him to make certain the slaver can't make it far enough to warn any allies that might be nearby. If/when the fleeing orc falls the Elf calls out to the woman as he approaches, Are you alright? They can't hurt you anymore.

=========
[sure, I'll mulligan the d8 to hopefully ensure he can't get away. maybe i won't need it later :lol:
RK1 "session 1" mulligan crit result [1d8] = 8: = worth it. :D
I hope that human that was knocked down isn't dead, but at least i have 114% mastery of the Dig Proper grave skill :lol: maybe Ruehar could do a seminar on it and charge for it so he can pay for his own training in the future :D]

RK1 vs fleeing hobgoblin Shortbow attk1,2 dmg1,2 [1d20] = 15[1d20] = 15[1d6] = 6[1d6] = 4
Not sure what the range is with him fleeing while bleeding and me walking so i will assume long range
Arrow 8: [1d20]=15+4 from behind +1GH=20, hit. 6 dam +1GH =7 dmg
Arrow 9: [1d20]=15+4 from behind +1GH=20, hit. 4 dam +1GH =5 dmg

Ruehar pursues the fleeing slaver, soon ending his life.
Ruehar returns the 100 years or so to talk to the chained woman.
"Please release me," she pleads, "I need to see to my boy. He had keys." she indicates the hobgoblin that had tied to run off.

"And us, "And me" echo the other pair of captives. One, a middle aged man, somewhat tubby with wobbling jowls and beaded hair wears once fine clothes, now ripped and dirty. The other is a ratty looking man, thin and wiry in befouled common clothes.

What next?
======
All arrows that have hit their targets are considered damaged beyond use.
Please adjust your quiver contents for the arrows consumed.

Ruehar readies another arrow and keeps a sharp eye out, Are there more hobgoblins about? He nods when she answers and goes to collect the keys, still watching carefully. Once he has them he returns and passes the keys to the chained up people, Release each other quickly please. Is that man on the ground going to be ok?

=====
128x 1.05 GH/2 = 134/2 = 67, and thief only 67 x 1.1 (Dex) = 74, giving 878/619

All 9 arrows hit so 11 left on me.

She replies, "He's my man; he's got to be!"
The ratty man bustles for the keys, "Me first!", resulting in them being dropped.

Meanwhile, the first hobgoblin starts to get to his feet. From this side you see that he, like the dead slaver, has a belt and pouch.
=======
Surprise check please.
If you are NOT surprised you can fire two arrows at him (on #1 & #6) with a -2 penalty on the first (reduced target) but +1 to hit (from the side) for both.
Then, if you were not surprised, what are your intentions for the next round (Round 7).

Ruehar spins and fires at the rising hobgoblin, backing away at a measured pace in the direction he had originally left the mule just to give himself more room if the creature attacks him. He continues firing until the hobgoblin dies.

--===
Only surprised on a 1
RK1 surprise vs rising hobgoblin [1d10] = 8: not surprised at all.
RK1 vs rising hobgoblin attk1,2 dmg1,2 [1d20] = 7[1d20] = 19[1d6] = 2[1d6] = 1
Arrow 10: [1d20]=7+5(attk bonus)-2(reduced target) +1(from side) +1GH=12,???. 2 dam +1GH =3 dmg
Arrow 11: [1d20]=19+5(attk bonus)+1(from side)+1GH=26, hit. 1 dam +1GH =2 dmg
Well those were some crap damage rolls

RK1 vs rising hobgoblin R7 attk1,2 dmg1,2 [1d20] = 14[1d20] = 19[1d6] = 4[1d6] = 5
Those should be hits for 5 and 6 dmg.

RK1 vs rising hobgoblin R7 init [1d10] = 3: -4 dex -1gh => -2

Ruehar pulls back 20yards and puts nasty nicks in the fleshy parts of the hobgoblin's forearm and shoulder as he struggled to his feet.
The hobgoblin utters a scream of insane rage and marches towards the elf whilst drawing his short sword {OOC: arriving on 6}
Maintaining unflustered, RK calmly put two more arrows into his opponent, who dies instantly whilst swiping the air with his sword.

What will RK do next (while the captives are releasing themselves)?

======
(R6) HG1 init 1, 9 segments to stand, up on 10.. Morale d20: automatic success.
As HG1 is effectively no longer wearing armour, A10 hits, as does A11, 3dam, 2 dam.
If you're using missiles which are readied, you don't need init rolls.
HG1 arrives on 6, PCs go first, HG1 hits AC9 (miss) and is put down to -4HP expiring instantly.
Already had the xp, but you can have 1 point of Temporal Honour.

Keep a lookout, Are there any more hobgoblins about? He keeps his bow ready and searches the nearest dead hobgoblin, saying I need to fetch, my pack animal soon. I am heading to the human settlement nearby. You are all welcome to travel with me.

=-===
His main goals are to keep watch, keep everyone together and unshackled, loot the slavers and get his ass over here. He will ask for help/cooperation from the freed people in keeping watch and seeing if the injured family is ok.

RK sees no more hobgoblins.
The chubby man him looking about and says,"These two worked alone."
Everyone's unshackled.
The boy is breathing but not moving. The woman rocks back and forth, cradling the boy's head and crying.
It's not clear that the prone man is breathing.
RV gets the ass & his stuff.

Loot:
HG1: Short sword, whip, scabby beltpouch containing a grey metal (crested, maybe a signet?) ring that's too wide for the HG1's fingers and coins 24cp,7ep,6g,and a vial with a green wax seal.
HG1: Club, scabby beltpouch containing a silver ring with a large red gem (ruby?) that's too wide for the HG2's fingers and coins 9cp,7ep,5g.
Also a set of six shackles and keys to match.
Two HG bodies.

Observation check please.
