An Ad&d 1st edition campaign

Post by spike »

Hi all,

Contemplating running a 1st edit ad&d campaign. Really contingent on how many interested takers there are on here.

please briefly introduce yourself, explain your roleplay history, and what kind of character you are particular to.

The setting is my own homebrew world, you'll start out at 1st level, with max hp.
Stat gen is simple: roll 4d6, reroll 1's and 2's, drop lowest score.

a successful party composition for this particular campaign (note this is merely a suggestion)
  • 1 magic-user
    2 clerics
3 fighters (preferebly a ranger or barbarian)
    thief or assassin
preference with nuetral to good aligned characters

if you can't be a team player, you'll either get yourself killed or your party members in the long run. I know this sounds like a no brainer, but I've had pc's in the past who did nothing but treat this like a videogame they were trying to beat in the first five minutes.

The campaign setting transpires in the Inner Kingdoms, 13 realms loosely aligned or loosely opposed to one another. Your characters will have started at random locations, but will converge and begin in a kingdom called Nyr.

brief info:

the world is in close proximity to Jupiter in diameter, has obviously hospitable atmosphere. Plant life is exceedingly exotic, more evolved and varied (expect animated plant life, plant-life creatures, and such).

There are two suns, one is orangey red and the other a subdued cobalt color

low magic, low fantasy

here's a little bit of a premise, backstory what have you

you were summoned in secret channels, whether by a magical sending, a hand delivered letter, or even a carrier pigeon the message was poignantly clear: your presence was commanded, not sweetly asked. When you read the letter, a *suggestion* compelled you to follow it to where it lead.

the rendezvou point: a place called Boarshead Inn in the wine country of Nyr. Seemed innocuous enough, it was a popular waypoint station for traveling merchants that worked the old mariners road. Sometimes mercs and thugs sought some easy coin there, but only to afford their drink and viddles.

you couldn't help but feel that eyes were on you. One minute a cat is staring at you strangely, and the next a raven.

one minute your sleeping off a night of heavy drink and revelry when men burst through your door, clad in black hood and robes their faces concealed with hideous masks that depicted an animal of different variations. They mostly wielded daggers or garrottes, and it was painfully clear they meant you no good.

You give them to slip, leaping out the window into a pile of hay, or some cleverer version of the story. You latched onto a clothesline and swung across the air of an alley and went crashing through the window of an adjacent building, landing in the bed of a bald merchant and his whore in the throughs of heated carnality.

You make good on your escape, but alone and being hunted by a cadre of black clad lunatics was not something you preferred. The Boarshead Inn, could it yield some answer to your current predicament? Or was it an elaborate trap? This just keeps getting weirder!

If interested let me know, thanks!

Very. Tempting.

I love old-school d&d, but 90% of my experience is in DM-ing 2e and playing very occasionally.
I'm currently over-committed... but what the hell. This is the first 1e game I've seen on the site so I have to do it.

I'd prefer a Ranger or Assassin; NG or TN respectively.

Oh yeah, Welcome to Planet AD&D :D

Looks great.. we have some great players here...
I'll also mention to people on the other site Kerap and I Admin.

I'm totally over stretched and there is no way I could do this..

I can help set everything up as you progress.

Thanks Jenara!

TristenC: lovely choices, thanks for wanting tn. Hopefully some others will as well.

If you opt for the assassin you'll have 5 factions to choose from:

religious: either a full established order or a cult of zealots, either way your handlers seek to further the ideals of their God. Typically this is a great one as you gain many temple benefits of healing, equipment, and other resources.
government: you're a government trained assassin and something of a political assassin as well. Similar to the above you would have certain perks such as access to rare weapons and resources.
house: you were acquired by one of the house lords as a field operative, dispatched as a sleeper agent to be activated when most inconvenient, you're bored, or just to give you a challenge.
secret society: an underground dissident group that seeks to subvert society and life, could be anarchists or dissidents with an agenda
guild: typical assassins guild

How do you handle:
-racial level caps,
-racial class choices and
-class alignment (specifically assassin. Phb says evil only, but if I go that route i'd rathet True Neut)
-rogue skill points (by table as per phb?)

assassin can be any alignment. There are many (at least in my world) good aligned beings who would easily kill others to further their agenda if the ends justified the means. A good assassin working for a good aligned order would gladly slaughter a bunch of criminal scum if it meant promoting the common weal.

racial level caps: once you reach the cap, you can ascend through taining and xp as per usual. However it will require more xp I'll peruse my notebooks when I get home and get back to you on precise amounts.

racial class choice(s) I have 3 additional races:

Dhampir: half human, half vampire.

Often mistaken as half elvish due to unusual comliness and charisma. The progeny of a male vampire that has impregnated a woman yet isn't yet himself fully born to darkness.

You gain a +1 to str, dex, infravision 120, and animal empathy.
have alertness as a bonus NWP
rapid healing factor: (NWP, CON) you heal faster than others through normal rest/sleep. This is checked vs. con at 1/2.
special weakness: blood lust. If you loose 1/2 your hp in blood you go into a mindless frenzy and attack the nearest being whether friend or foe.

dhampir typically are found as specialists to root out and combat supernatural and undead entities. They are exceptional thieves, assassins, and swordsmen but some have been known to turn to necromancy or become clerics of some neutral or darker power.

#2: Drenai (Dren for short)

An ancient warrior race of men and women who only lived for combat and battle. Due to their fanaticism and devotion for fighting, they have gained certain advantages over countless ages in warfare:

+2 to strength, +1 to dexterity
strength can exceed 18/00 through intensive training
gain endurance and high pain threshold as bonus NWP
weakness: warriors pride: strong desire to fight opponents stronger than themselves, and no desire to fight opponents weaker than themselves

Dwemer
an ancient lineage of Dwarven master architects, engineers, builders and craftsmen

+1 to INT and WIS
can gain engineering, weapon-smithing, armoring as bonus NWP
typically gain +50% higher gold for items they create
can create and invent new devices, ideas, technologies that don't exist yet (such as gunpowder for instance)
ability to create automatons and mechanical seige weaponry at higher levels (6+)

Dhampir: Hahaahaaa! Beautiful. Extremely tempting. If I go for assassin it's a toss up between this and Elven for me
Drenai: so like Greek Spartans...
Dwemer: cool :)

The racial class choice question was actually regarding race/class combos (elven ranger, dwarven mage, etc)

To parallel Jen's offer, I can also create game threads and such upon request

Ah got'cha.

So Dhampir can be fighter/assassins, thieves, or magic-users, or fighter/clerics.

typical demi-human multi-classes assignments apply, however I do allow for the sporadic deviation (e.g. a dwarven cleric/mage with unusually high INT for instance). You can always dual class as well as a human :

Drenai are indeed similar to Spartans.

There's also two distinctive races but they're all human with certain cultural benefits:

Elsmyrian: amazonian, gain horsemanship and short bow proficiencies as bonus. An ancient warrior race known for their hatred of orcs and mastery of naval battle.

Nyriddian: barbarian race of honorable warrior clans, skilled with use of a difficult throwing weapon known as the glaive.

@Spike - just got in from work - not the best of days - and this looks like a joy! (And that's no disrespect to any of the games I'm active in - enjoying those immensely)
Intial set-up paragraphs look sparking. And the home-made races are great too. Spoilt for choice but just becasue I've played a number of undead hunters over time, I'd definitely go for the half vampire just to turn that on its head.

Queries on Dhampir:
Are they vulnerability to any to any of: sunlight (either of the suns), garlic, running water, religious symbols?
Does blood lust kick in when that are at 50%HP, even if only lost 1 or 2 HP over many rounds? Or 50% of remaining (current) HP in one blow or one round?
Do they have reflections?
Do they have souls or spirits?
Are they immortal? (Or what sort of lifespan?)
Do you allow multi-class with sub-classes? e.g. barbarian/assassin?
And if you're full up already, I'll pout. ^^

Chris1234:

Nope, none of that. I play vampires more akin to Anne Rice's vampire chronicles vs. oldschool Dracula types. However they have a weakness to natural, non magical fire and take double damage from it.

Blood lust kicks in after 50% current. So if you have 10 hp and you're pierced by two arrows for -5, I'll roll a check vs. your WIS at 1/2. Failure means you're consumed by the lust and attack the nearest living being to suck their blood.

Do they have reflections? yes, indeed.

Do they have souls or spirits? souls

Are they immortal? (Or what sort of lifespan?) unknown, you can learn through adventuring. The few Dhampirs that do exist are secretive and stealthy and do not meet up and exchange notes. However one dhampir who was a beloved king some 10,000 years ago lived up to 10,500 years before dying.

Do you allow multi-class with sub-classes? e.g. barbarian/assassin? Nope, sorry. Assassin class is pretty deadly as is. Not sure if you knew but every attack an assassin classed character attempts has a chance being a critical hit per the assassin assassination matrix. You could certainly be a fighter/assassin but not barbarian/assassin.

And if you're full up already, I'll pout. ^^

I'm not!

TristenC alluded to possibly playing an Elven ranger or assassin
A Dhampir fighter/thief with specialization in longbow would be a pretty intriguing character (just a thought).

The only time I ever played an assassin he was a master archer who could fire off 4 arrows/round. His tactic was to snipe from afar, by the time any tried to flush him out he'd disappear and reappear elsewhere (thanks to a magic item called the shadow cloak, which allowed him to teleport shadow to shadow within 30' ft range)

He got bored killing people and became the baker of a quiet town at 15th level of experience. :)

I think I will go with fighter assassin. Now I just need to pick Dhampir or Elf.

Once we get a 3rd confirmed interested party I'll make up a forum for the game. What do you want to call it?

First Edition is basically a simpler form of Second Edition. That is to say, if you find 2E easy to learn, then 1E would be even easier, as it has fewer rules (no proficiencies or kits, for instance).
