Chapter 1, Landing at Port Collins

A D&D 5E homebrew, a short tale to get to grips with this new system. Many travel to Wovara, a mostly uncharted isle on the fringes of civilisation, where man attempts to stake a claim against nature and the unknown.

Chapter 1, Landing at Port Collins

Post by mgbevan »

"Landing at Port Collins"
[With a little impetus to get things up and running, please begin to post in character and take this segment as an opportunity to flesh out your characters' personalities and get a grip with the surroundings and names of places and people through role play]

You are standing on the pier at the Borma docks, only wood and sea stand before you. Deep blue water, dark and blackened brown wood and white wispy tips of the wind licking at the sea. The group of you has taken a job (posted on behalf of non-other than Lord Collins himself!) to travel to Port Collins on the isle of Wovara and escort a VIP around. “Wovara, the land of untamed beauty and unclaimed bounty” was the pitch that came with the job, you remember the agent's voice quite clearly a happy ring to it, as well as complimentary passage and 25 gold to each member taking up this fine opportunity.

When you look around you do see that more than one person has been hired to undertake this job, the group of you stand at the start of the pier. Already moored at the pier, with crew busily moving goods and various cargo onto the deck, stands the ferry you will be taking. There is a man, presumably the captain, checking papers and logs as crew load things onto the simple boat. You hear him calling various male and female names and individuals already clustered at the end of the pier proceed to board the ferry.

Once all the other passengers have boarded the ferry with their belongings only the group is left. The captain scrunches his face reading the last paper carefully before looking up and noticing your group. He yells down the pier, beckoning with his hand, “So you lot must be the mercs Freya’s ordered, that right? Come on over and tell me whose who and what for.”

Tha chainmail-clad dwarf steps up, "I'm Meran Brightshield, acolyte from the temple."
Meran puts a hand to the warhammer dangling from his belt, shifts his weight from foot to foot, and adds, "I'm supposed to gain field experience."

Sornin will step up to the man.

"Sornin's the name, merriment is the game. Sea has you down? I can brighten the mood! I am here to record the heroics of Freya and our lot! Things of legends, and so forth!"

Meran replies, "Well, Rose, as an Investigator, doesn't than mean you can tell us what we last had to eat? But I'm happy to tell you if that would help."

Rose will try to read Meran mind with her bond to the darkness to glimpse what he had for dinner. if she can guess she will tell him and say "its not polite to make assumptions so i prefer to ask questions instead. besides even what someone tells you if not true can gleam information"

The bald dwarf nods, "I'm happy to tell you. But if you want to try and guess, that's fine too. Be my guest, Rose. I'm intrigued why though. Is it a custom? Should I try to guess your last meal too?"

The bold gnome will chuckle.

"You wouldn't guess what I ate in a million years!"

Sornin things back to his night at the inn, and his company.

A human male steps forward, standing at attention at 5 feet and 9 inches. He's muscular and clean-shaved with a slight scar on his left cheek. He has short, blond hair and blue eyes. He wears chain mail, although does not have the coif on at the moment. A sword is at his belt, a shield on his arm, and a pike on his back. "Right then, Jason Barker, reporting for duty," he says. Then as an afterthought, he leans toward Rose and says with a wink, "Wedge of cheese, two strips of jerky and a stale roll."

The captain listens and scribbles away on his paper as names and introductions are made, looking up intermittently to put names to faces, "Brightshield... Dwarf... Rose... Sorin... Gnome... Barker...."

Looking back at where the group came from, one would see the market town of Borma, or at least it's wooden palisade, visible on the horizon. Albeit slightly grayed out as a fine mist is blown off the sea. The wind seems quite strong enough to travel at speed. Hair, clothes and the captain's papers all flap around as a gust sweeps the pier. Prompting the captain to yell towards the boat, "Boys! How long till we're ready?"
"Just the rigging Cap' Five minutes" one crew member shouts back from the deck
"Make it four so we get there before sundown!" Looking back at the group, the captain comments "I don't think Miss Freya would be joining you, her in the forest, now that would be a sight ha! Don't tell her I said that though. Now those last two with you as well?" Gesturing to the two figures at the back.

[Rose smells dark pepper on the breath of the Dwarf, suggesting dried and spiced ham or similar meat, a common ration for those travelling. The Gnome is standing down wind of her however and has no luck determining it. ]

Although unfamiliar with large masses of water, it isn't a source of fear, just uncertainty to Meran, who enjoys every breath of wind on his skin.
He turns his attention inward, towards their little band, looking Sornin and Rose up and down. {OOC: Descriptions?}

"Pikeman, eh?" says the bald dwarf as he steps forward, offering a hand to the newcomer. "Pleased to meet you, Jason. I'm Meran." He finishes awkwardly, "From the temple," and then adds, "Nice, solid chainmail!" and compares it to his own. His deep red beard appears to be compensation for the lack on top.

When the group looks at Sornin, they see a gnome, who is full of himself enough to fill an Ogre.

Wearing fine clothes of green and gold hues, a pan flute slung around his neck, a rapier hung loosely around his waist, and a glib look on his face.

If you needed a picture of a gnome that was a Lothario, he would fit this fellow in that picture. Short kept hair, trimmed managed beard, and a calm soothing tone in his voice. The voice... it was also melodic.

You can also tell this little fellow does not know how to pack for a journey. Hes pack seems like it is stuffed with some items that would be used for entertainment. Doesn't he know he is going on an adventure?!

occ:rose is a pale, thin and wispy thing with dark black long hair and percing bark blue eyes. she always has a hood up casting shadows around her head and shoulders within. looking into that darkness gives most an uneasy feeling like looking out into a dark forest with wolves howling. she uses a spear like a walking staff. you can also see a picture in the description page

Rose thinks for a bit before answering "you had a spiced ham travel ration and you gnome had hopefully nothing illegal" she says as a jest
