CH. 15: There and Back Again

As the conversation starts to die away, Naras explains about the genasai and its reference to finding the location of book and queries if they've any thought on the matter?

Instead of responding, Naishe suddenly vanishes into thin air and reappears behind the slaad. She stabs at it with her daggers, causing it to rear forward in pain. This gives Gallath an opening, and he fires an acidic arrow right into the creature's neck. It staggers, then is sucked back into its home dimension before it even hits the ground.

There's silence as Naishe heaves, trying to catch her breath. She looks down at herself and frowns, then concentrates. The demonic visage changes back into a human one. She does not put her daggers away, though and eyes Gallath warily. "Well," she says, "...now you know. I'm part demon. Not something I asked for...it just is how I was born. I can usually keep it hidden, but when I'm hurt or angry..."

She is still pretty badly wounded and is bleeding heavily from her shoulder and arm.

Naishe blinks behind the slaad and then stabs it from behind (+4 to hit) with her primary dagger, dealing 8 damage. She then stabs at it with her secondary dagger, dealing 3 damage. The slaad is now near death.
Gallath fires an acid arrow (+1 dmg) at the slaad with elven grace (+1 hit) at point blank range (+2 hit) [TN 14] (1d20+3): 12+3 = 15, hit for (1d8+1): 5+1 = 6 damage. Slaad vanishes.

Gallath picks up his arrows. "I..." He trails off, then walks over to where the slayer fell. He checks to see if she is alright. "Naishe, I... Wait, she said I was a demon too..."

Peering down the hole in the roof, Gallath can see Penta lying on the ground, surrounded by rubble. She seems unconscious, but alive.

"And are you?" asks Naishe. "You said she was crazy."

"That was when I trusted you." he says flatly. He climbs down to the demon hunter.

"So you're picking her over me?" asks Naishe as Gallath climbs down to Penta. "She'll probably just try to kill you again, you know!"

"She's a person, like you... half are, and she needs help. I'm not leaving her for the.. other things out here. I'm only trusting you for now because I need to get back to the ship. I need time to think about it. Help me bind her wounds, then her hands." He disarms her and does what he said he would.

"Half a person?" Naishe scowls. "I thought you were different...but you're just as bad as that fanatic. You both deserve each other." As Gallath binds Penta's wounds, Naishe starts climbing down from the roof. Gallath has no rope to bind her wrists, so he removes his belt and uses that. It's not ideal, but she's unconscious so she likely won't be trying to escape for awhile anyway.

"Look Naishe, my life was destroyed by demons. I spent my life fighting them." He runs his hand over the red streak in his hair. "And now that someone I care about is one of them... Look, I just need time to think. You can control your... other half, or whatever you want me to call it... right?"

"Care about..?" She seems surprised by his use of this phrase. "Fine, I'll help you drag the fanatic back to town. I'll try not to look too demonic while doing it."

Working together, they manage to carry the armored woman back to the shantytown. By this point, night has fallen completely and the stars are visible up above.

"Back to the Bullring. Do you have a safe space to stay tonight? I'm sure Sierra would house you for the night, seeing as how you used to work for her."

Naishe agrees, and the two carry Penta to the Bullring. Luckily it's night, so they don't draw too much attention in doing so.

Sierra is still up when they arrive, though, and offers a puzzled expression. "Where the Nine Hells have you been? And who is that woman you're carrying. And...is that Naishe? Thought you quit."

"Hells... heh." he chuckles mirthlessly. "Long story short, crazy demon slayer, some slaadi showed up, like the one we killed on board the Bullring, me and Naishe killed it. We tied up the slayer and brought her here. She tried to kill me, but I didn't want to leave her to die out there."

"That does sound like a long story," Sierra notes. "Well, it's late. We can sort it out in the morning. We'll toss her into the brig for now, deal with it when she wakes up. You two should try and get some rest until then," she adds.
