CH. 13: Resident Evil

Post by JadedDM »

The night passes without further incident. Jocelyn and Brock take the first watch, the dwarf keeping a sharp eye out with his infravision. The second watch is taken by Baeros and Granite. The third watch is given to Gallath and Drav. Finally, the last watch is taken by Thaddeus and Ouragana, which is filled with awkward silence throughout. This allows everyone to acquire 6 hours of sleep, except Val who gets a full 8.

It's another clear day. There's less of a breeze, and it's a bit hotter--nice beach weather, though; nothing too serious. Those in the party wearing heavier clothes might get a little sweaty.

Brock serves the remainder of the fish stew for breakfast, making sure everyone gets enough to eat and drink. Val is feeling better today, some of her strength returned. Brock, Val, Gallath and Drav all wake up a little stiff after sleeping on the hard ground without blanket or bedroll, but are otherwise alright. While the casters prepare new spells, the rest of the group breaks down the camp and packs up their gear. Today they will be entering the mansion and facing whatever challenges lie within.

=============

It is now Ruebon 26, Flameday at 6 AM.

Here is the current marching order. You may wish a new one that takes Drav into account:
Baeros (8)/Takit (12)/Hopper (12)
Ouragana (12)/Thaddeus (12)
Jocelyn (8)/Brock (3)
Dahn (4)/Gallath (8)/Val (4)

Casters can choose new spells.

Jocelyn uses the rest of the cure prayers she has on Val and Brock (Cure Mod wounds on Val and Cure Light wounds on Brock) before she prays to replace them all.

(She is going to replace all of her spells with what she had previously. She also relearns prayer.)

She couldn't bring herself to talk with Thaddeus as yet, so Ouragana decides for herself to memorise another WEB spell. In the mansion, there should be plenty of anchoring points, and at least she could delay or split battles with it.

Baeros wakes up early and goes to the lake to wash himself. He returns to the camp half naked, with the shirt and his boots in his hands and his hair still dump. When seeing Val eating he smiles and says to her in his best manner, "You are eating like a pig! Good to see you are feeling better!"

Van looks up by rolling her eyeballs. Once ashe makes eyew contact, she raises her head, curling her upper lip on the left side before letting out a deep growl. It goes on a few seconds before the half-orc comes to her senses. "Uhhmmmm....Sorry." she says before returning to her food.

Jocelyn casts a healing spell on Val and Brock. Val's wounds heal marginally, while Brock is fully healed. The cleric then sits down to pray for 80 minutes to regain her spells. Ouragana and Thaddeus spend only 20 minutes studying their own spells.

Suffice to say, by the time Jocelyn is finally finished, everyone has had plenty of time to eat, drink, pack up camp and get ready.

===========

Jocelyn casts Cure Moderate Wounds on Val, restoring (1d10+1): 7 HP. Val is now critically wounded (25% HP).
Jocelyn casts Cure Light Wounds on Brock, restoring (1d8): 7 HP. Brock is now fully healed (100% HP).

It is now 7:20 AM.

(OOC: Still waiting on suggestions for a new marching order.)

After packing, and seeing that Thaddeus is ready as we,, Ouragana takes a deep breath and approaches him.
"Thaddeus, whatever our feelings are, we have to work together, and should make sure we don't get into each o ther's way. I have prepared two WEB spells. A SLEEP spell,a SHIELD and a DETECT MAGIC are still memorised. If we're attacked, I'd try to put them to sleep. If they're too powerful, like the trolls were, I'll interpose a web between us and at least part of them so we can deal with them one by one. As soon as there are seriously wounded people, I'll do my best to shield them and me."

Baeros lifts his packs looks around until all are ready and starts going on the path to the mansion, carefully looking for dangers in the wood.

=====================================================================
(OOC: Assuming Baeros trains Hopper and Takit everyday, and since Hopper is about three weeks older than when he was found, is there any change in their status?
Invisible castle is down again, so you can re-roll the HP instead of me. Thanks.)

Thaddeus nods to Ouragana awkwardly, having trouble maintaining eye contact with her. "That sounds like...an excellent strategy. I've prepared a number of offensive spells, including fire and acid should we run afoul of more trolls." He clears his throat.

The party moves closer to the mansion by walking around the perimeter of the lake. They have to ford two rivers to do it, which isn't too difficult as they are fairly shallow. Granite, being the shortest, has the most trouble crossing. Before long, the mansion comes into view more clearly.

Image
It's a large, two story building. Centuries of neglect has caused it to fall into ruin, although one imagines it was quite gorgeous back in its day. There isn't anyone about--at least, not that the party can see. The windows are all boarded up. The front yard is enclosed in a steel fence about 9 feet tall. There's a gate in the middle, but it's closed with a very rusty chain and lock. Looking through the bars, they can see an old well in the middle of the courtyard. The entire place is eerily quiet.

When they reach the gate, Brock says, "That lock is all rusted up. A good chop will probably break it."

=========

(OOC: No change yet in Hopper. Although keep in mind Baeros has not been training him every day. There's insufficient room on the ships to properly train. You'll probably need to wait for a significant amount of downtime first.)

As he walks up the gate, Drav looks up at the mansion, mainly looking for a raised outdoor path or a ledge of some sort. "Well, someone might as well hit the lock, It'll probably be the easiest thing we do today."

"Val, you want to do the honors?" Jocelyn asks as she looks up at the mansion. "I'm not the only one that is curious as to why there is a huge mansion on an island that we have never heard of before, right?"

"Maybe the wizard hoped to attracke a following, found a school like the Storm Sorcerer Academy" Ouragana offers.

"I could look if the lock is magical or not, but that would probably be a waste of a spell. Perhals someone else knows hot to detect trapped locks?"

Drav doesn't see any raised paths or ledges or balconies on the building.

Brock approaches the lock and with a hefty swing of his axe, shatters it. Three hundred of years of no maintenance left it in pretty poor shape. He pushes open the gates, which squeak loudly from rust.

"Looks like the only way in is through the front door," the dwarf remarks. "Should we knock?" he asks sardonically.

The courtyard is overgrown. The grass is as tall as Granite, and choked with weeds and other plants. Hedges have grown wild. In the very center is a stone well.

Across the courtyard is the entrance to the mansion. They are elaborate steel doors, but not much detail can be made out from the party's current location.

Baeros takes again the lead. Few steps before the well he slows down a walks more cautiously to peek in. If nothing jumps out he says, "Well, we haven't stirred anything so far. Don't throw anything to the well, or shouts down it. Even that is tempting..." and continues to the main door checking if it is also locked.
