A few hours pass, and the sun begins to set. Soon, it will be nightfall.

Despite having spent the last few hours with his animals, Gallath decides to feed and groom them again. He is in the process of doing this when he hears a commotion up on the upper deck. He hears shouting and boots stomping.

I grab Thrax and go upstairs, readying my shortsword.

Gallath climbs up to the upper deck. It's night out now, and the stars shine above. The two moons are out, as well, but neither is full currently.

The crew are running to and fro, loading crossbows, buckling swords and readying the catapults and ballistae. He spots the captain up on the forecastle, looking at something to the north with a spyglass.

"What's going on?" he asks the captain.

"Take a look for yourself," the captain says, handing Gallath the spyglass.

Peering through, Gallath sees a large dragon in flight approaching from the north. However, unlike most dragons, this one has no scales, no flesh, no muscle. It's simply the skeleton of a dragon.

What's more, the dragon is not alone. Riding on its back are a number of people. Most of them have sallow skin and horrible injuries that should be lethal (snapped necks, missing limbs, cut throats, etc.). They look like they were killed, then somehow brought back from the dead.

The two men riding on the dragon's neck, though, appear very much alive. One wears black robes with a hood that covers his face. The other wears red robes and appears to be on fire, although his flesh isn't burning at all.

"We don't know if their intentions are hostile," the captain says, "but we aren't taking any chances. You might want to go below if you don't want to get caught up in the fight."

"If there is a way to kill it, we must, and I shall be here next to you!" I look for Thaddeus. "Thaddeus! Use your acid on the ballista bolts if we must fight!"

"If you want to help, I won't complain," the captain says, taking back her spyglass. "But don't give my crew orders."

She looks over her shoulder. "Battle stations! It'll be here any minute now! Get ready!"

"But we could melt the dragon!" I prepare my bow and hawk.

"Evasive actions!" the captain calls. The helmsman steers the ship away from the dragon, but it does little good. It's clear now the dragon is on a direct route to the ship, making course corrections along with the ship.

"I guess it was too much to hope they were just passing by," the first mate says.

The dragon flies into range. "Catapults, ballistae, and all archers...fire!"
