The Only Way to Fly

The old legends say that Reorx, the god of crafts, once walked among the mortals. He sought out those with the greatest desire to build and create. However, those smiths became arrogant, believing they could even craft better than Reorx himself. In punishment, Reorx cursed those smiths with an eternal desire to create, but an inability to ever be satisfied with their creations. Thus were the first gnomes born.

Indeed, this airship could well serve as a perfect illustration of the gnomish curse. There are numerous bells and whistles all over the place that seem to serve no particular purpose; including literal bells and whistles. Numerous gnomes wander about with clipboards, taking notes at various gauges and meters that--at least as far as Babushka can see--don't measure anything of importance. There seem to be several apparatuses that were added for the sake of being added, that don't actually help the ship function and may even hinder it.

For instance, there are several spinning hamster wheels, each containing a running hamster, that seem hooked up to what appears to be a butter churn. The movement of the wheels causes the churn to move. But what purpose this device serves is left up to the imagination.

As for how the ship itself actually flies, it seems the main component is the large balloon overhead that lifts the ship up into the air. Some manner of engine then directs the ship forward, although it is unseen--perhaps it is down below. In any case, it seems to cause large fans in the back of the ship to turn, pushing the ship along.

The whole ship seems to precariously put together, it's really no wonder it has already crashed once already.

Babushka remembers her father's and uncle's textile machines and her attempts to create something marketable from their output. She tries to get up and see if she can find Dekker and her saddlebags, but then she remembers her textile work assets have been lost. Nevertheless, it would feel good to be close to her most longtime companion.

Babushka heads down below where the animals are stabled. Dekker and Greycap, along with the horses and ponies, are all down there. They are a bit skittish, likely due to the ship's loud engines, but are otherwise alright. Their saddles and packs have been removed and set nearby, and they have been fed and brushed.

Babushka plays a little with the two donkeys. She then asks Dekker to lie down, because she's too weak to stay on her feet for long, and then will take a nap huddled up close to her longtime animal companion.
