Arc 01

312
Turquise 01, Flameday - Echo wakes in the morning, in her room, and goes downstairs to see her mother. Echo announces to her that she intends to go adventuring in order to make enough money to survive the winter, as her mother's apothecary shop is doing terribly and they have to rely on charity just to make do. Orelel is reluctant about this idea, but knows Echo is a grown woman who can as she please. Echo heads to the Snow Queen Inn, reluctant to have to deal with any of the town's citizens. Echo interrupts Ol' Deg, the innkeeper, to ask about jobs. Deg tells her there are three he knows of: some orc bandits are raiding villages, and the Countess' brother is looking for someone to deal with them; the city guard are trying to smoke out the local thieves' guild; and some pilgrims of Gonto are in town, searching for a lost artifact. Echo decides to go with the third one, and lo and behold, there happens to be a pilgrim in the inn at that moment. The pilgrim in question is a man named Hollidan Redstone, and he's a paladin of Gonto. Hollidan explains the pilgrims are a group of 40, mostly civilians, searching for the Shield of Baerin, an ancient and holy artifact that was lost years ago. He agrees to take Echo to meet their leader, a Pharise of Gonto, to hire her as a guard. The Pharise was less than impressed, and Echo's attitude didn't help matters. But Hollidan vouched for her, so he hired her as a scribe (2 gp a week, with a contract of 4 weeks). Echo agreed, then returned home to her mother to tell her the news. Echo then went to prep her horse, Renegade, for the long trip.

Turquise 02, Frostday - Echo awakens and has a teary good-bye with her mother before heading off to the local temple. Echo is surprised by the sight of children among the pilgrims, and she meets another paladin, Cadegund, a woman with an arquebus. Echo pisses Cadegund off by speaking disrespectfully of the Pharise, which nearly causes an altercation. Echo then goes to report to the Pharise and meets a dwarven acolyte of Gonto, Gimog. When Echo says her last name, Soulstaff, both he and the Pharise seem to recognize it. When pressed, the Pharise denies having ever heard of a Daos Soulstaff. Later, though, Gimog admits he has heard of the name, but not the man--rather, an artifact. Some old legends say there are six artifacts, all connected, and among them are the Soulstaff and the Shield of Baerin (known as the Rockshield). She also learns some more about Gimog. Echo then asks Hollidan about the third paladin, their leader. She learns his name is Argis Bulwark. Supposedly he has a short temper. Echo comments that unlike the other two, Hollidan seems more laid-back and endearing. The two then enter a snark contest for awhile, and Echo learns some more about his past and more about the faith of the pilgrims. She also learns the pilgrim's current destination: a lost temple supposedly in the mountains to the north. Hours of traveling later, when night falls, the group comes across a small village. Echo knows little to nothing about it, so the Pharise sends her, Hollidan, and Gimog to investigate. Echo questions an old gnome about whether there was a temple in town--turns out there was once, 150 years ago. But it was destroyed by a dragon, and the clergy simply abandoned the village and never came back. The three return to the Pharise and report. He decides to rent out rooms in the inn for the children and elderly, and the rest will just camp outside the village, despite the rain. Echo is faintly impressed with this. She is about to just sleep on the ground, in the rain, but a young elf offers to let her share his tent. He introduces himself as Nuvain, an acolyte of Gonto. Echo learns quite a bit about the young elf and also reveals some of her own history to him, namely the story of her first (and only) sexual encounter three years ago. She also admits to him she has an attraction toward both Argis and Hollidan.

Turquise 03, Darkday - Echo awakens to find the rain has stopped, but the temperature has dropped further. She spots the paladins conversing and gets close enough to eavesdrop. There is some concern the forest up ahead, as well as the mountains, well prove too dangerous. Cadegund, especially, is worried the three of them won't be able to properly protect all of the civilians. Afterward, Echo approaches Hollidan alone when he's prepping his horse, Clementine. She discovers that Nuvain has been questioning him about Echo, likely due to her admittance of being attracted to the paladin the night before. Echo and Hollidan begin some flirtatious banter before setting off for the northern forest. They arrive around nightfall and start building camps again. Echo decides to promptly wander off from the group to search for herbs. She finds some blue mountain flowers that are good for healing poultices. However, she gets ambushed and then treed by six wolves. She puts one to sleep with her magic, but that's all. Luckily, Cadegund rides in and saves her by shooting one wolf. The noise scares off the others. After healing Echo's wounds and chastising her for wandering off on her own, Cadegund decides to retrieve the two defeated wolves to cook and skin. When the return to camp, Cadegund says she went hunting and found the wolves. Echo claims she was just 'tagging along.' Not only does Cadegund not correct this, she makes no mention at all of Echo wandering off. Echo asks Hollidan to share his tent, and he agrees, but does not join her. Instead, while studying, a small tawny owl slips into the tent and surprisingly enough, speaks to her. The owl asks about the pilgrims and their destination. It has heard of the temple and warns her of its danger, but cannot be specific about it. It also shows an interest in her faith in Renos and admits to have been watching her when she was attacked by wolves. After that strange conversation, it flew off, leaving Echo to wonder if she had dreamed the whole thing or not.

Turquise 04, Lightday - Echo awakens the next morning to the sounds of panicked screams. Stepping outside of the tent, she spots three two-headed trolls attacking the camp, one to the north, one to the south, and one to the east. The paladins and clerics split up to handle them, and Echo joins the group on the east (Hollidan, Nuvain, Gimog and the Pharise). The battle doesn't go well at all, but when Echo reveals to the Pharise that the creature is vulnerable to fire, he tells her of a Wand of Fire in his tent. She quickly retrieves it. She starts to taunt the troll so it approaches her, then attempts to blind it by blowing up the nearby campfire. This fails to work, however, and she gets knocked out when the troll backhands her. She awakens that night, discovering that the battle had been lost and the three trolls escaped with 9 captured pilgrims, including a child. Hollidan, Gimog and Nuvain have decided to launch a rescue operation, and Echo agrees to help. They ride off, following the creatures' tracks, and come across a cave half an hour later. The first troll they find, Echo binds it with a Wall of Fire, until it burns to death. Hollidan rescues two pilgrims, an old woman and a young woman, but discovers the half-orc male has been half-eaten already. Nuvain scouts ahead and discovers a sword stuck in the ground, but Echo insists they ignore it for now. They come across the second troll, and again Echo tries to blind it but fails. She drops a Wall of Fog on it, instead. When Gimog and Nuvain free the three pilgrims, she then throws a fireball. Assuming instantly it's dead, she steps out of hiding, only to discover she was very wrong. Luckily, she manages to finish it off with a burning hands before it can crush her. The rescued pilgrims consist of two men and an old woman. Nuvain is sent to scout out the last chamber. He quickly comes running back, the third troll on his heels. Echo traps it in another Wall of Fire, but it steps out of it, ignoring the burns. She then throws a fireball at it, which weakens it enough for Hollidan to torch it. Echo and Hollidan step into the last chamber to find that two of the pilgrims were eaten, but the third--the little girl, was alive but unconscious. After retrieving them, the treasure, and the sword (which turned out to be a holy Purifier great sword), they headed back to camp. Echo finally tells Hollidan of the talking owl, and he claims it is an omen and the Pharise should be informed. When they arrived at camp, heralded as heroes, Echo tells the Pharise about the owl. He informs her that there is an old legend about Baerin being warned about the dragon by a talking tawny owl, too. That night, she tries to rest but is woken up by a kobold pilfering her stuff. She captures it, and it begs for its life. Hollidan and Cadegund discover more of them in the camp and chase them off. When Hollidan comes to warn Echo, the kobold hides in the tent. Echo does not tell the paladin about the kobold. After he leaves, the kobold asks why she spared him, and she cited mercy. The two begin to talk, and Echo realizes the kobold might be valuable at the temple, as he is a thief. She tells Hollidan of this, and he seems reluctant, but suggests she waits to tell the Pharise until the next morning.

Turquise 05, Rockday - When Echo awakens, she finds out from the kobold (whose name turns out to be Keet) that a talking owl visited while she slept. But Keet couldn't really remember anything the owl told him. Echo and Hollidan went to speak with the Pharise, but he easily agreed to let Echo hire the kobold. Hollidan suspected she had earned some respect from the Pharise after all. Hollidan also gives Echo her share of the treasure taken from the trolls' lair, which is more money than Echo has ever seen in her life. The party travels to the base and makes a temporary camp. The Pharise sends some scouts into the mountains to find a path to follow. Echo meets Leonor and Sofia to check up with them, and discovers that Leonor has a crush on Hollidan and Sofia wants to be a mage like the 'Flame Sorceress' when she grows up. Echo tells Hollidan about the crush, teasing him, but gets upset when he asks about her mother. She fumes to Nuvain and learns that she may only really learn to be happy by changing her ways. The party then sets up the mountains until night falls.

Turquise 06, Seaday - The pilgrims come to a cave and the higher-ups have a meeting, which Echo eavesdrops on. They decide to send in a scouting party led by Argis, who asks Echo and Keet to accompany him. While inside, Echo nearly steps on a pressure plate and Argis mistakenly believes he's attacking Echo. Once this is cleared up, a pair of gnome guards approach. It is learned that the gnomish city of Granitehome is in the mountains. Argis manages to convince the gnomes to have their leader speak with the Pharise to negotiate letting the pilgrims pass through to the temple. Once this is done, the gnomes agree to allow the pilgrims passage through their town. Once getting a room at the Stone Grotto Inn, Echo leaves Keet behind and goes out shopping for supplies and a cloak for the kobold. Echo then met up with two of the men she helped rescue from the troll's cave--Juban and Issac. Echo tells them about searching for her father, and Juban recognizes the name. He thinks it was the same name as the tutor of the royal family. Grateful for the lead, Echo then goes to speak with the paladins. She flirts with Hollidan then asks him to help her in finding her father, but he doesn't commit, to her disappointment.

Turquise 07, Soulday - Echo awakens and discovers the pilgrims are prepping to continue on. Echo orders some breakfast, only eats half of it, and brings the rest to Keet. The two, the kobold disguised in his new cloak, then join the pilgrims. Echo chats with Leonor about why she joined the brotherhood. Echo also speculated that something happened to Hollidan in Praven, and he was using his duty as a paladin to avoid going back there; this is why he wouldn't agree to go with her to find her father. Echo then goes to speak to Hollidan. They talk about the small beds they slept in in Granitehome, but Echo also mocks the pilgrims' faith a bit. They eventually reach the massive steel doors of the temple, which is built into the mountain itself. Echo finds some script on the walls, and the pharise uses it to open up. Argis chooses a team that consists, among others, Keet and Echo.
