CH 2: The Search for More Money

"You could be right with that, Val" Ouragana says with an appreciating nod.

With a quick divination cantrip, she tries to see if anything about the track and its surroundings show signs of magic.

[Jenara]

"Of course." Arei slaps her forehead, "That explains why it stops here." She steps to the Gravel path, "Of course it might be nothing."

It takes Ouragana three tries to get it right, but she completes a simple divination cantrip. Of course, she cannot direct the cantrip in any particular direction. The cantrip will only tell her whether there is magic of any kind within thirty feet of her; it won't pinpoint where magic is coming from, and whether it would be coming from the tracks or anything else nearby.

However, the cantrip does not register any magic at all within thirty feet.

Ouragana uses yet another cantrip (1d20): 13, pass. No magic is detected within a thirty foot radius.

(OOC: Note that a divining cantrip can be used in "divining the presence of magic in a 30' radius (but not type, direction, or strength)." (emphasis added) In other words, you can only use it to determine if there is magic of any kind somewhere within thirty feet of you. The cantrip will not tell you where the magic is coming from. You need an actual Detect Magic spell for that.)

Having been distracted by her cantrip attempts, Ouragana does not react immediately to Areilon's words. "There is no sign of anything magical around here" she declares. Then she frowns. "I'm sorry, Areilon, but I can't quite follow you. What explains what?

[Jenara]

"The walking stick would make less imprint in the Gravel, wouldn't it?" She asks.

[Nuke]

"Yes, you can't see it under the gravel." Val pauses to see what the plan is.

[xelphyn]

"Any family of the victims here now? could you point them out to me?" Dahn asks the halfling.

[JadedDM]

Pearl looks around the room for a moment. "No, I don't see any at the moment. I think the family of the first victim left the island. I'm not sure about the families of the others, though."

[Breila]

"Ah, that was what you meant. I thought you had been thinking further" Ouragana says to Areilon, a little distractedly. She looks around and sighs. "Well, it seems to me we have found everything that can be found here. Should we return to the inn now?"

[Jenara]

"Indeed. Good spot with the marks." Arei comments, walking slowly. "I might make a short trip around, just to see some more of the town."

[Nuke]

"The inn sounds good." Val walks along with the ladies.

[Breila]

"Indeed, a cool drink will be good" Ouragana says, taking the path down to the village.
"Arei, are you coming with us?" she asks when the elf takes a different turn.

[Jenara]

"I will catch up with you soon." Heading away from the Inn she heads to the Barnacle Inn...

As Jocelyn sits in her room, telling Noah about their new quest, Val and Ouragana return to the Paragon Inn to find Dahn having lunch with an attractive halfling lass.

Meanwhile, Areilon heads to the Barnacle Inn, a far less reputable establishment. It's dreary, dank, and there appears to be quite a few dried bloodstains on the floorboards. Most of the patrons are sailors on shore-leave, teamsters and laborers off-duty, and the drunk and directionless.

This isn't the first time Areilon has been here, of course. She frequented it quite a bit when she first arrived in Narin, hoping to find work on a ship somewhere. But she just had no luck at all, which is what led her to teaming up with the group she is in now.
