CH 9: To the Walls of Pax Tharkas

[Nuke]

Riverwind steps up confidently and pulls the door open, peering inside.

[JadedDM]

The door opens into a large circular room. Here, as in the corridors leading into the chamber, the dust on the floor is thick and unmarked. A curious feature of the room is the column in its center, which slants to the side but climbs far out of sight above, at least 100 feet.

A little closer look makes it obvious that the column is actually a massive chain, supported by a huge iron bracket sunk into the center of the floor. Each link is as long as a man and the iron bands forming the links are nearly a foot thick. The bracket in the floor is 15' across and nearly 3' thick.

There is another unmarked bronze door on the opposite side of the room.

[Kafen]

Tas lets out a small gasp of wonder and surprise. He cracks his knuckles and steps forward to inspect the chain. "Any bets on what that goes to?"

[Breila]

Goldmoon steps close to the chain, holding her staff up high and looking at it in wonder.

"This must have been an immensely rich city, to afford so much iron and so much forgery work." Then a thought occurs to her. "Is there a gap between the floor and the walls? Maybe this can be pulled up and let down, to transport things?"

[Jenara]

"Could we be...?" Laurana ponders a moment, looking at the Chain, "Pax Tharkas has huge gates, designed so when they are closed, they cannot be opened again.." Looking around she smiles, "This might be that very chain." She says as she looks up.

"Big Chain go up?" Magpie smiles, "Me go up big chain?" The little dwarf asks, staring upwards, he eyes wide in awe.

"I think we should check that door first Magpie, we don't know where the chain leads really, I am just guessing." Laurana strokes the dwarfs hair. Still she looks up, she could climb that, it was nothing more than a big tree.

[Jerrard]

"A large chain? Even if Laurana was right, we couldn't all climb it." The Knight frowns, "Tas can you check the door?"

[Kafen]

"Of course!" Tas hops to it and inspects the door. (( Letting the GM make the rolls, on blackberry at the moment )) "I bet I can climb the chain." He remarks, casually. "I mean, I can climb the chain if we really need to do it. I bet it would be fun." He speaks as he works on the door.

The kender inspects the door carefully for a couple of minutes, but finds no sign of any traps.

"Looks good!" Tas gives the all clear and turns his attention to finding the latch if possible.

Pushing open the door, the kender reveals another hallway leading to the south. Like the others, it too is covered in dust and there are no sign of any passage from any creature.

[Jenara]

"This place truly is a maze isnt it?" Laurana moves slowly with the group, holding into Magpies hand in case she ran off, "Tas keep an eye out, you too Magpie.."

"Me find trap." Magpie says with a suprisingly girlish smile.

"Indeed it is a maze, lets move as quick as we can." Sturm comments.

[Nuke]

Riverwind inspects the ground as they go, not seeing anything worth note. "Lead on Princess."

The party continues, following the tunnel south. It then turns to the west, revealing...nothing! It's just a blank wall.

[Kafen]

Tas stretches and makes a pose. "I say we search this place. You never know where the spiders might be hiding." He steps up to search the area for secret doors and openings.
