Rolling - the Exploding Dice Mechanic

The dice mechanic for this game is pretty simple. The more powerful or more controlled your character is at any given action, the larger the die they use. Untrained or unskilled individuals roll a d2 to perform any given action, and trained individuals start at d4 and go up to d12. (Although some things just CAN'T be done, even if unskilled. For example a character can't shoot lasers from their eyes if they don't have that power.)

Critical Strikes: when ever a character rolls the maximum number on any given die, they get to re-roll and add the totals together. As long as a character keeps rolling the maximum number, they continue to accumulate points toward their action. Yes, this means that a character who rolls a d4 is more likely to get a critical strike than a character rolling a d12, but larger dice have a potential to have a FAR larger total, even with a single roll. (A d12 that scores a critical has the potential to score 13 to 23 points assuming that another '12' isn't rolled.)

Modifiers can be given due to circumstances as judged by the GM as well as from training and health (Or lack there of).

When characters are using skills or powers in direct opposition of each other, they make opposing rolls rather than having a single character roll to overcome a target number. This doesn't happen often, but the most common comes in melee combat where two characters will make Combat skill rolls, the highest number being the successful attack.

This was what I had meant with the example of an alien flying onto the roof and someone else shooting him down. Question answered.
