CH. 13: Consequences

This 2E Dragonlance game is set in the city of Haven, during the War of the Lance. Haven is a city undergoing great upheaval. First massive numbers of refugees pour in, then the city is conquered by a draconic army. Can our heroes survive under this dark occupation?

Haahqae (River Way)
After finding a hiding spot, Haahqae uses a spell to turn himself invisible. He then rejoins the back of the crowd.

Haahqae casts Invisibility on himself.

Sadron shakes his head. "My people sometimes speak of the old gods, but we stopped believing in them a long time ago. They are like myths now. I only vaguely remember hearing about the Dragon Queen as a child, but she was more of a boogieman meant to scare children into behaving. Perhaps we should have taken those old stories more seriously."

Ne-Chanz and Shima (Central Haven Sewers)
Shima mechanically swings his long sword at his foe without any expression, thought, or emotion. Is he afraid? Confident? Angry? What is he thinking? Who can say? He doesn't even offer a pithy one-liner. Mutely, he swings. The blade is blocked in any case.

Ne-Chanz strikes at the same skeleton again, but this time he hits it hard enough that it crumbles into pieces. The one behind him, however, stabs him lightly. The minotaur then strikes the second skeleton, damaging it badly but not enough to destroy it.

Initiative
Ne-Chanz (1d10+5): 5+5 = 11
Shima (1d10+5): 6+5 = 10
Skeleton 01 (1d10+6): 9+6 = 15
Skeleton 02 (1d10+6): 7+6 = 13
Skeleton 03 (1d10+6): 6+6 = 12
Skeleton 04 (1d10+6): 10+6 = 16

Round 2!

Shima swings his long sword at Skeleton 01 [TN 11] (1d20): 3, miss.
Ne-Chanz swings his long sword with great skill (+1 hit/+2 dmg) at Skeleton 01 [TN 10] (1d20+1): 14+1 = 15, hit for (1d8+2): 6+2 = 8/2 = 4 damage. Skeleton 01 crumbles.
Skeleton 03 moves 10 feet east and 5 feet north and stabs at Ne-Chanz with its spear from behind (+2 hit) [TN 13] (1d20+2): 12+2 = 14, hit for (1d6): 2 damage. Ne-Chanz is now lightly wounded.
Skeleton 02 stabs at Ne-Chanz with its spear [TN 13] (1d20): 3, miss.
Skeleton 01 is dust.
Skeleton 04 stabs at Shima from behind (+2 hit) with its spear against his leather armor (+2 hit) [TN 14] (1d20+4): 2+4 = 6, miss.
Ne-Chanz swings his long sword with great skill (+1 hit/+2 dmg) at Skeleton 02 [TN 10] (1d20+1): 15+1 = 16, hit for (1d8+2): 7+2 = 9/2 = 4 damage. Skeleton 02 is seriously damaged.

(OOC: Hitting with the flat of the blade actually does less damage. Also, you didn't state your target for your second attack, so I decided for you.

Ooc: awesome map, thanks. He wants to be in the trees near the Happee Ohgr, planning to use the trees to screen him from the group and possibly the goblin bar to escape through...

Preparations: (Out of view of everyone)
-Fire Trap on flask of oil
-magic stone on his three slingstones (these can all be thrown in 1 round per the spell description, correct?)
-1 round to create a 1'x5' Glyph of Warding (fire type) in a band in front of where he is hiding. Designed to go off when a Draconian (crature type dependent) passes over it.
-last round (only once he is concealed in trees and the other things are done and the procession in-range) Hold-person on: Raena, Yvette, Xyleena, and one baaz (the ogre can't be held, right?)

Shima tries to hit the remaining northern skeleton, adding, "Good thump!"
He reflects, not for the first time, that he expects to die down here but will continue, without complaint, to try help Ne-Chanz until then.

"Thanks. Be careful, or you're going to end up like poor Felran." Ne-Chanz attacks #2, twice if necessary, but if not nessecary, he attacks the one that just hit him.

Without only a guess at what the goblin is planning, Haahqae decides the best course of action is likely going to involve freeing the dwarf when events start unfolding. To this end he tries to work his way around or through the crowd to figure out who is holding the keys for the dwarf's chains.

Haahqae (River Way)
Haahqae is able to manuever around the crowd fairly easily with his invisibility. The downside is that since nobody can see him, they make no attempts to not step on him. He has to be careful not to be trampled.

None of the baaz or the four adventurers are wearing obvious keys anywhere on their person that can be seen. Likely the keys are kept in a belt pouch instead of being shown off to the world.

As he works, Miracle's voice comes unbidden into his head. This is the man who attacked you before? But now you wish to free him? I do not understand.

Kendra Greylock (2527 Market Street, Greylock's Gorgeous Gems)
"I wouldn't go that far," Sadron counters. "The gods were the ones who abandoned us, after throwing a fiery mountain at the world, after all. They're all just as bad as the Dragon Queen, if you think about it."

Grubnick (River Way)
Hiding behind a tree, Grubnick digs through his pack. He pulls out the last flask of oil he has, and casts a spell upon its lid. That done, he then digs out his last three sling stones and casts another enchantment on them. Then he places a glyph of warding in front of him. All that remains now is to begin the attack and hope for the best.

===========

Grubnick casts Fire Trap on his last flask of oil.
Grubnick casts Magical Stone on his three sling stones.
Grubnick casts Glyph of Warding in front of him.

(OOC: To answer your questions, all three magical stones can be thrown in one round and half-ogres are too large to be affected by Hold Person although draconians are not. I made a new map which is much cruder, but more accurate. The red star is the glyph. I wanted to give you one final chance to look things over before casting the final spell.)

Ne-Chanz and Shima (Central Haven Sewers)
The battle rages on, although neither Shima nor Ne-Chanz are able to do any real damage against the skeletons. Although quite dead, their defenses are still top-notch. Ne-Chanz does get another sharp poke in the back, however.

Initiative
Ne-Chanz (1d10+5): 5+5 = 10
Shima (1d10+5): 9+5 = 15
Skeleton 02 (1d10+6): 2+6 = 8
Skeleton 03 (1d10+6): 6+6 = 12
Skeleton 04 (1d10+6): 1+6 = 7

Round 3!

Skeleton 04 stabs at Shima from behind (+2 hit) with its spear against his leather armor (+2 hit) [TN 14] (1d20+4): 5+4 = 9, miss.
Skeleton 02 stabs at Ne-Chanz with its spear [TN 13] (1d20): 3, miss.
Ne-Chanz swings his long sword with great skill (+1 hit/+2 dmg) at Skeleton 02 [TN 10] (1d20+1): 8+1 = 9, miss.
Skeleton 03 moves 10 feet east and 5 feet north and stabs at Ne-Chanz with its spear from behind (+2 hit) [TN 13] (1d20+2): 16+2 = 18, hit for (1d6): 4 damage.
Shima swings his long sword at Skeleton 01 [TN 11] (1d20): 4, miss.

"Hmm, maybe," Kendra says, even though she seems unsure about the whole discussion. "But if there are other true clerics in the city, doesn't that mean that the other Gods are back as well?"

[Ooc: Thanks, that looks good. *crosses fingers*]

Grubnick makes sure he is concealed and his hood still pulled up after all of the running and preparations. He double checks his position with the glyph (keeping it between himself and the baaz) and he makes a quick silent prayer. Please... Sirrion guide my flame, which you gave me.

Keeping himself concealed so he can barely see the group through the greenery, he silently whispers the words to his spell.

Grubnick casts Hold Person on X, R, Y and 12 (baaz 12)

What would you say the range increments are on an oil flask?

Well that’s the thing isn’t it? The stupid draconians locked up the entire trade guild for a crime that Gregeddin might have commit, they arrested Ismene for a reallocation of wealth that I did and they’re now commending Xleena and Yvette instead of incriminating them for the theft that I reported from the Belzorite lair, so it seems very unlikely that this dwarf actually was the one who attacked my show. And I’ve never seen this dwarf before, what incentive would he have to attack me? Chances are pretty high that he’s just another innocent getting unfairly punished for something he didn’t do. Even if that crime was against me and the real perpetrator should burn because of it.

That’s why I’m not up there escorting him to the temple myself. Why I’m thinking about releasing him is because Xleena, Yvette, Burzan and Reana are all backstabbing shitheads who deserve much, much worse to happen to them after what they’ve pulled. If I can deny them an unjust reward and save an innocent at the same time, all the better.

Without any obvious key rings lying around, Haahqae decides to search the pockets of the nearby Baaz. If he should happen to find a purse while scrounging for the key ring, that’s ok. Soldiers are overpaid and don’t have to pay taxes anyways. If he should be caught, he’ll have to rely on being invisible and hope the blame gets cast on one of the nearby civilians, if the Baaz should even think of moving to touch Haahqae as he pickpockets, Haahqae will quickly draw his hand away so as to not come in physical contact with the Baaz.

(Haahqae will attempt to pick the pocket of Baaz #7)

Haahqae (River Way)
While Miracle is left to ponder the gnome's words, Haahqae manages to match pace with the baaz in question and then tries to untie his belt pouch. He succeeds fairly easily. Peeking inside, he finds five steel coins. But no key.

Suddenly, the procession comes to a halt. Raena, Yvette, Xyleena and one of the Baaz just stop walking mid-stride. "Why did you stop?" asks one Baaz. Murmurs of confusion spread throughout the group.

===========

Haahqae attempts to pickpocket Baaz 7 [TN 25%] (1d100): 1, pass. He steals 5 steel pieces.

Kendra Greylock (2527 Market Street, Greylock's Gorgeous Gems)
"I'm not sure," Sadron admits. "If they are, they don't seem to be doing anything. Or maybe they're helping the Dragon Queen. Who can even say?"

Grubnick (River Way)
Grubnick finishes his prayer, and it seems to work. Xyleena, Yvette, Raena and one of the baaz just suddenly freeze in their tracks. It happens so abruptly that Delharn actually walks into Raena, bumping into her. The procession comes to a halt, confusion spreading. "Why did you stop?" asks one Baaz.

===========

Grubnick casts Hold Person on Xyleena, Raena, Yvette and Baaz 12.
----Xyleena saves vs. spell [TN 17] (1d20): 6, fail. She is held for 10 rounds.
----Raena saves vs. spell with dwarven fortitude (+3) and a weak will (-1) [TN 16] (1d20+2): 10+2 = 12, fail. She is held for 10 rounds.
----Yvette saves vs. spell [TN 15] (1d20): 5, fail. She is held for 10 rounds.
----Baaz 12 has magic resistance [TN 20%] (1d100): 81, fail. He saves vs. spell [TN 17] (1d20): 14, fail. He is held for 10 rounds.

(OOC: According to the DMG, throwing a light object (5 lbs or less) has a short range of 10 feet, a medium range of 20 and a max range of 30.)

Ne-Chanz and Shima (Central Haven Sewers)
Shima and Ne-Chanz are both stabbed in the back again. However, the hulking minotaur manages to destroy the second skeleton with a heavy swing of his sword. This allows the pair to whirl around and face the last two. Shima hits the third one, breaking a few rib bones. Ne-Chanz then follows up with his own attack, nearly breaking it into two--but not quite. The skeleton still has some unlife left in it to keep fighting.

Initiative
Ne-Chanz (1d10+5): 4+5 = 9
Shima (1d10+5): 7+5 = 12
Skeleton 02 (1d10+6): 4+6 = 10
Skeleton 03 (1d10+6): 3+6 = 9
Skeleton 04 (1d10+6): 1+6 = 7

Round 4!

Skeleton 04 stabs at Shima from behind (+2 hit) with its spear against his leather armor (+2 hit) [TN 14] (1d20+4): 19+4 = 22, hit for (1d6): 3 damage. Shima is now critically wounded.
Skeleton 03 stabs at Ne-Chanz with its spear from behind (+2 hit) [TN 13] (1d20+2): 20+2 = 22, critical hit! for (2d6): 3,4 = 7 damage. Ne-Chanz is now moderately wounded.
Ne-Chanz swings his long sword with great skill (+1 hit/+2 dmg) at Skeleton 02 [TN 10] (1d20+1): 18+1 = 19, hit for (1d8+2): 6+2 = 8/2 = 4 damage. Skeleton 02 crumbles to dust.
Skeleton 02 is destroyed.
Shima swings his long sword at Skeleton 03 [TN 11] (1d20): 13, hit for (1d8): 5/2 = 2 damage. Skeleton 03 is moderately damaged.
Ne-Chanz swings his long sword with great skill (+1 hit/+2 dmg) at Skeleton 03 [TN 10] (1d20+1): 17+1 = 18, hit for (1d8+2): 8+2 = 10/2 = 5 damage. Skeleton 03 is near destruction.

Kendra wrinkles her nose a little bit at the thought that the other Gods might be helping the Dark Queen. If that is the case, then there really isn't any hope to be had. "Then...is what I'm doing pointless?"

Grubnick moves so the glyph is directly beyween him and the forward baaz (1-5) and he is outside the blast radius. He then hurls his three magical stones at the half-ogre (range 30 yards as the spell).
