Time when Kelban Arunsen was the Blackstaff and the Seven sisters were all alive (ok one was a ghost having been killed by a blue Dragon, I think) and Durnhan ran the Yawning Portal.

Not going for strict adherence to Canon..

Stats will be via a Point-buy system slightly modified from the PHB

30 point buy system, stats start at 8
Only one stat can be bought up to 16 before racial adjustments are applied.

to bump stats between 8-13 it costs 1 point each
bump stats to 14 and 15 cost 2 points each
bump stat to 16 costs 3 points

Example:
buying Str up to 16 from 8 costs 12 points [1+1+1+1+1+2+2+3]
buying Dex up to 14 from 8 costs 7 points [1+1+1+1+1+2]
buying Con up to 13 from 8 costs 5 points [1+1+1+1+1]
buying Int up to 12 from 8 costs 4 points [1+1+1+1]
buying Wis up to 10 from 8 costs 2 points [1+1]
Cha stays at 8
total points spent: 30

Stats (before race chosen) 16, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8

Player choses a "Dragonborn" [+2 str, +1 cha]
final stats: Str 18, Dex 14, Con 13, Int 12, Wis 10, Cha 9

So, are we rolling or choosing height/wt?

I'd like to opt to roll starting wealth rather than taking the pre-fab options (both are presented in phb) is that good with you?

How do you all (players and DM) feel about working our chars together so they know each other?

Well Nix is (probably) going to be a native of waterdeep, so if the others are there'll be plenty of opportunity.

I should be able to tweak my backstory to tie everyone interested in, depending on their bits. I'll post my part here and we'll wee what we can work up.

Nixthi’vraklos never knew much regarding the circumstances of his birth. In his earliest memories, he only recalled life on the streets of Waterdeep… City of splendors, except for those born without means. Growing up in the Harbor District was rough, and young Nix and his friends were often forced to steal simply to survive. His Tiefling nature wasn’t common, but near the Harbor ‘his kind’ were tolerable. Throughout adolescence Nix began to pick up more advanced tricks of the shadier trades, learning to use thief’s tools and disguise himself more easily. It seemed his life was set for the path of a rogue, unsurprising for a Tiefling born here; but fate and one of the ArchFey had other plans…

Nix bolted through the winding Warrens’ streets with his prize, using his hard-earned ability to navigate the maze-like streets at high speed. Rounding a corner he slammed into an old woman in wildly tangled robes with dozens of trinkets and fetishes tied into the coarse weave. He fell back in shock, his young mind recalling stories of Hags and coven witches and powerful magic. He stared, unable to move as the withering hand reached for him; knowing he would die. Suddenly, recognizing his half-fiend nature, the crone grinned. Turning she left before he could react. There on the ground lay one of the trinkets… a spiraled length of deep green crystal…

Nix snatched the object and hid. Peering deep into a faint light within, he felt a presence… it promised him the power to change his fate and serve one greater. It was Nicniven, the Moon Weaver herself; Lady of Copper and Crystal, Queen of the Witches… Young Nix listened… and accepted.

I was considering a Thief/Cleric race to be decided yet.
