Jurisdiction Explanations, Titles & Proper Names:

Empire: Politically, an empire is a geographically extensive group of kingdoms/states and peoples united and ruled either by an emperor, empress or an oligarchy.

Kingdom: A realm ruled by a king or queen. All within the realm are ruled by them and all other regions of land within are controlled by those individuals they appoint.

Grand Duchy: Typically, a grand duchy was an independent and sovereign territory ruled over by a Grand Duke or Grand Duchess. They are often an independent country conquered by a King or Queen and left to be ruled by their closest of bloodline (ie a Grand Prince or Princess).

Duchy: A duchy is a territory, fief, or domain ruled by a duke or duchess.

March: A marquess's land, called a march, was on the border of the country, while a count's land, called a county, often wasn't. Thus a marquess was expected to defend and fortify against potentially hostile neighbors and was thus more important and ranked higher than a count.

Earldom/County: A smaller section of land then a march usually subdivided into townships or other administrative jurisdictions under the county's control. The boundaries of a county usually, but not always, contain cities, villages, towns, or other municipal corporations. Depending on the particular nation, municipalities might or might not be subject to direct or indirect county control. Also known as a shire.

Fief: A fief was the central element of feudalism and consisted of heritable property or rights granted by an overlord to a vassal who held it in fealty (or "in fee") in return for a form of feudal allegiance and service, usually given by the personal ceremonies of homage and fealty. The fees were often lands or revenue-producing real property held in feudal tenure. Fief's were land usually carved out of the estates of the upper nobility (ie small parcels of land divided within a duchy, march or county).

Baronetcy: A baronetcy is a dignity that passes down from generation to generation within a family, like a peerage. But a baronet is not a peer. In the Tables of Arkuthian Precedence, a baronet is below a baron and above a knight. A baronet's written and spoken title would be, for example;

"Ser Brodan Guardian of Adan, Baronet". This is distinct from a peer, who would be styled "Brodan, Lord of Adan" (if he were a baron, viscount, earl, or marquess) or "His Grace, the Duke of Adan" if he were a Duke.

This is similar to the title of a knight, but unlike a knighthood a baronetcy can be inherited. Baronets and knights are not lords and are never addressed as "my lord";  however, their wives are called "Lady" prefixed to their surnames only, and can be called "my lady."
